Jackson County inmate dies of apparent suicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An inmate at the Jackson County Detention Center has died following an apparent suicide.

The inmate was found unresponsive shortly before 4:30 a.m. today. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

“We care about the welfare of all of those who are in our custody, so it’s heartbreaking for all department staff when someone takes their own life,” said Department of Corrections Director Diana Turner. “We take each incident seriously and have begun an internal investigation, which is standard protocol. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

No other details will be released at this time. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and responded. The Department of Corrections is assisting the Sheriff’s Office.
