  3. Haddad is a stupid camel jockey who belongs back east like in the middle east.

  4. It will be closed in less than a year. Haddad ruins everything they touch.

  5. Is this for real? Which abandoned JoCo strip mall is it in? There are plenty to choose from.

  7. In the earlier post Haddad is right about one thing, people aren't driving to the Plaza for upscale dining as much. First and foremost, the gauntlet of panhandlers and rowdy "kids" you have to pass to get to your destination for lack of parking is key. The money has long been traveling south. KC & the MO suburbs won't spend $32 for a bath towel at Restoration Hardware or two grand on a chair at Ethan Allen but JoCo will. Out here in Independence/Lee's Summit we've lost Ethan Allen, Lazy Boy, Bassett. With them goes more development like decent restaurants. People out here like their food in bulk accompanied by endless sweet tea.

I also think that the ridiculously low BAC number and redefining drunk driving as "buzzed" driving caused people to look for options closer to where they live.

  8. This is great. I love Plaza III. A little redesign though, as the JoCo version has group seating around large flat griddles with individual cooks at each griddle/table. You can order beef, chicken, shrimp, and lobster, with the beef and chicken cut up and cooked liberally in teriyaki. Unlike the original, the new Plaza III will have some fine entertainment. Watch as the chef flips cooked shrimp into the mouths of those seated around the table, rolls an egg on the grill and calls it an "egg roll," and creates onion volcanoes with lighter fluid right on the grill. The chefs are Mexicans posing as Japanese chefs, but they work harder for less money. Should be a great place and you know their loyal customers will make the trek out to JoCo to get that true Plaza III experience. Winning!

  9. Grew up in Kansas City with the impression Plaza III was 'it.' Took out-of-town clients there, met friends there mainly because of location and past glory. Atmosphere, wait staff, and bartenders all were a plus. The food left a lot to be desired.

Concerning a great steak in a strip mall (or anywhere) J. Gibert's is great meal. We dine there ~6 times a year and it's been years since we've walked from a meal less than pleased.

  10. A steak house will only be successful in a Kansas City strip mall.

  11. Ha, 10:02 gets it. Yeah I don’t know. I’m sure it will be good food, but it’s not the same. Plaza 3 on the plaza was a place to take clients to or have a nice date. Now that the plaza environment and culture has gotten so ghetto it’s different.

As for the Japanese steakhouse points 10:02 makes its true. The “egg roll” and onion volcano...I remember when I first ever saw that and I thought it was unique to the chef. Waayyy back in the day when it was an Asian chef. Then over the years I realized it’s the same tricks over and over. It’s true though, many of these “chefs” at Japanese steakhouses are Mexican. In fact sometimes the whole restaurant will have an entire shift of no Asian.

  13. Plaza III has a lot of nostalgic fans. Bit it'll need to be impeccable to succeed in a strip mall. If it tries to ride on reputation and milk that for money, it won't last long.
