ANOTHER WEEKEND FAIL FOR 'OPEN SPACES' KANSAS CITY ARTSY FAIR!!!

Kansas City has a lot of artistic talent but there's simply no denying that this even was designed poorly and hasn't managed to turn out local patrons or any of our alleged 25-million visitors.

Today's example with a TKC highlight . . .

"An ugly truth was revealed 25 minutes into Lonnie Holley’s appearance in Swope Park on the afternoon of Saturday, September 29. More than 100 name tag-wearing people who were part of a Kansas City art tour affiliated with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art left the concert and boarded buses that were parked near the pavilion hosting weekend presentations for the Open Spaces festival. Less than 20 people remained. The small group of Holley’s fans and Open Spaces staff members witnessed an amazing performance."

And so we put it to you . . .

HAS OPEN SPACES BEEN NOTHING MORE THAN A EPIC FAIL FOR KANSAS CITY MAYOR SLY & THE CREATIVE CLASS???

Let's not forget that this debacle cost taxpayers $500K.

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. Swope park was a dumb location. A month long event was way too extended to generate any interests. Sly also ripped off the artists.

  2. Wrong location, wrong town. Too bad for the artists, but not surprising.

  5. Just another pitiful attempt by Sly to use taxpayers' money to schmooze another special interest group and try to make himself look hip and sophisticated.
At least it was "only" $500,000.00.
Not millions like THE streetcar, "smart city tech", and "luxury" apartment subsidies.
It's going to take a whole lot more than a failed "arts scene" and bicycle lanes to bring "everything up to date in Kansas City".
Sly's been fading fast in the stretch as reality rears its ugly head on one after another of his projects.
Good luck to the next mayor and city council.
Hope they have at least some expertise in managing debt.

  6. No way Open Spaces costs taxpayers only $500,000! Don’t forget all the money the Parks Board is spending on this Slie Ego Trip!!

  7. What about corporate support? Why does KC have to foot the bill for this junk. We keep wasting money on this stuff but we still don't have reliable trash pickup. What a nightmare.

  8. As long as Gopher and Slie got to hold hands and stroll through the event, I’m sure they found $500k to be a small price to pay.

  9. The millenials of KCUR made this sound like it was going to be great.

I blame the lack of bike lanes, scooters or trolley lines

    I KNOW!
Maybe if they gave away free pizza!

  10. ^^^^^^^^^^^ Ouch.

But that pretty much says it all. Hope they cancel this next year, it was a horrible waste of money.

  11. Why Swope Park.... ?

  12. Tony you need to check out "overture the musical" which just finished a short run at a community theater (or something) in a formerly courtly, presently shocking neighborhood at 9th and Harrison, called "arts asylum" in a former stately church building. I usually hate musicals but this one was great, set in 1953 KC while the society types were trying to raise funds to save the philharmonic orchestra. It's funny, touching, sweet,a little sad. It was great. Good songs and several really outstanding singers-everyone was good in it. A great cast too. If it comes back somewhere you should see it.
