Dr. Ernest Evans: KCPD Personnel Levels
"With respect to the crime situation in KCMO, an important aspect about our crime surge since the summer of 2014, like the crime surges we have seen in most of the cities around the country, is that police forces all over the country, which were already seriously under strength at the time of the Ferguson tragedy of August 9, 2014, are now massively under strength.
At the end of calendar year 2013, the last year before Ferguson, there were 242 sergeants, 250 detectives, and 724 patrol officers in the KCPD.
As of the end of 2017, there are 239 sergeants, 241 detectives, and 683 patrol officers in the KCPD. And, remember, in 2013 the KCPD was already under strength. As a number of veteran police officers have put it to me: "Doc, nobody wants to be a cop anymore."
If we want to cut crime in KCMO we are going to have to bring the KCPD up to its proper strength."
