A denizen of our blog community witnessed a historic event today and with implications for the future of Kansas City's coffee scene.

TODAY STARBUCKS RAISED THEIR SIGN OVER BROOKSIDE!!! LIKE IT OR NOT THE CORPORATE JAVA GIANT THREATENS THE DOMAIN OF KANSAS CITY COFFEE KINGPIN DANNY O'NEILL AND THE ROASTERIE!!!
Remember, not so long ago the coffee dude took a hit for badmouthing the po-po. In the aftermath he apologized and attempted to spin his support for law enforcement. The issue blew over but a neighboring coffee outlet up the block might not be so forgiving.
To be fair, longtime denizens noted that Starbucks didn't outlast The Broadway Coffee House in a caffeinated battle for Westport. But that's only because the Plaza & Westport locations now basically serve as an outlet to print money.
And so, as the corporate giant looms large over this middle-class enclave . . . We ask our blog community if overpriced indie outlets can defend their grounds.

ReplyDeleteI think the best cappuccinos are at Quik Trip. Starbucks coffee is horrible, and don't know what the Roasterie is like, but I do think the owner is a spoiled Putz, so I won't be doing business with him.

ReplyDeleteMost of these coffee "connoisseurs" wouldn't know the difference between expensive and cheap coffee in a blind taste test -- certainly couldn't tell the difference between a "premium" espresso vs. an ordinary one.
ReplyDeleteThey've studied this with wine for years. Other than the very top experts in wine, nobody can tell the difference between a $100 bottle and a $20 bottle. Goes for so many other things. In a blind taste, you could mistake a Chili's hamburger for gourmet, or Taco Bell for authentic Tex-Mex.
It's all branding and marketing.
Just stay at home at drink Folgers coffee and save a ton of money.
