Lesson In Disparity & Assistance: Kansas City Schools Offer Free Meals Amid Summer Break

An important look at public school real life and growing need among the NextGen:

Free food for kids during summer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The summertime can be hard for children who struggle to get meals when they're not in school, but the Hickman Mills C-1 School District is offering help. The district's summer food program will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner meals Monday through Friday from June 6 - June 29.

  1. It is not free food. It is food paid for by the taxpayers.

I have seen online and library posts of "free" lunch being offered Monday through Friday in JoCo and the Dotte while schools are on summer break. The SINGLE meals are intended to serve low income kids in specific zip codes, but the program has become generously expanded to any kid of the entire district who shows up is allowed the lunches.

THREE meals is shocking. It seems TWO is surprising. ONE meal per day, either breakfast or lunch is plenty to ask of taxpayers.

  10. ^^^ A sad but often necessary situation. I hear a lot of these schools are also providing take home lunches too so that school age kids will have food to take home at night.

  11. If you cannot feed your family, your last act should be selling your organs to Columbians. If you can't do that, I guess you hope God is as merciful as many say.

  12. How did our forefathers ever make it? Many of them had 4,5 maybe 10 kids and they didn't get free lunches at school.

  15. It's unfortunate that so many children need this. It's also unfortunate that a school district with limited funds has to take of kids while Sly takes care of the millionaires.

  16. 7:23, there is no evidence that "so many children need this." A parent who would feed her own children if left to herself may reasonably decline to do so if somebody else will provide that service at no charge to her. Makes more sense to put meal money to some better use. Mani-pedi maybe.

  17. A wonderful idea, feeding the needy children.
Eliminate food stamp program and only feed hungry children plus the old and sick. Hungry adults might be compelled to seek employment.
