The family of an Overland Park teen fatally shot by police has filed a lawsuit, arguing the officer used excessive force.

John Albers, 17, died as a result of a shooting on Jan. 20. Police were initially called to the Albers’ home for a welfare check. According to 911 dispatch audio, the caller said Albers was chatting with a friend on FaceTime, saying he’d been taking pills and drinking. Albers allegedly said he was done with life and threatened to hurt himself.

  3. Kid was drinking and drugging and tried to run over a cop and now he is dead. Who was at fault? The kid. Now the family is trying to make some money off it, the should be ashamed, but since they live in Joco are not capable of shame. Fuck them.

  4. Cops are terrified and nervous by nature. Not surprised. They'll get something from OP Police for this injustice.

  5. The first chance a judge gets this case should be thrown out and the family charged for the wasted tax dollars used to wake them up to reality.

  6. The cop was shooting from the side, he wasn’t in danger and he the poor kid wasn’t even halfway out of the garage when he started shooting, horrible situation for the parents, the kid wanted to die but Jesus man, that cop should be out of work.

Sad part is that is the first shooting I’ve ever seen where I disagree with the popo.

  7. Cops routinely shoot dogs and whatever else "startles them." Total pussies, each and every one of them.

I'm going with the PoPos did mostly right on this. How could they let Opie go on the run possibly juiced on whatever and threatening suicide? It wasn't like Aunt Bea flung the screen door open and squealed to Barney, "Oh, my, something has really upset lil' Opie. Quick, Barney, come talk to him. Help me settle him down. Andy's at Mount Pilot and I just can't get ahold of him. Ooooh, Barney...my Opie's so upset."

These days, standoffs, shootouts, and high speed eluding can go FUBAR as all hell in a hurry!
Yeah, if the teen had gotten away and plowed into and killed or maimed others, we'd hear yuuuuuuge outcry that PoPos failed to protect innocents.

  10. The parents lived with him every day and knew what they had. The blame rests squarely on them.
