Agree. Many need help with mental health and managing life issues. Several are veterans and you can bet the VA isn't going to get its lilly white hands dirty doing their job. There are some that got caught in a personal downturn and landed in the homeless department. One thing for sure. No one with any horse power is working to identify the issues or assist these folks in getting their lives on track. The answer is not entitlements. the answers are about enabling, providing clarity and dealing with issues that have jacked some of these lives.
Very many in these predicaments know there's help at Catholic Charities and other aid agencies for medical and counseling therapies. Pantries, daily meal services, libraries, most churches, FD, PD, and mobile outreaches get word out on assistance availability. Sometimes those with addictions and other disorders HAVE TO GET TO THE POINT OF "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH", AND IF THAT COMES TO THEM BEFORE "HITTING ROCK BOTTOM", that's a very good thing.
Yeah, some will decide that going to work--paying bills--living good habits--making better choices--maintaining positive attitudes ISN'T SO BAD!
Don't slam the VA for not helping homeless vets. You can't help someone who doesn't want help. There is another reason for so many street people. They don't want to follow the rules for shelters and other assistance programs. Again, you can't force people to get help.
These people are homeless, why aren't them heading south for the winter? It's not like they have anything keeping them here, like jobs or responsibilities. As others have mentioned, there is an entire "Industry" providing help for people like these, but you have to follow rules like not stealing, using the toilets, and not setting fire to someone who is breathing too loudly to suit you.
Why is one TKC person commenting on Atheists every post? Is he that afraid of them? Apparently he thinks they are wrong, in which case they will be damned and he'll never have contact with them or if they are correct neither he or they will ever know.
Does he feel this way about anyone whose feelings or opinions regarding religion differ from his? Christians OK, but Jews, Mormons, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, Deists, Right Wing Tea Party Republicans (KEKists), and everybody?
Sorry, but I just don't get it. People are different, their opinions and beliefs are different, I doubt that anyone can be absolutely sure that their beliefs are more valid than someone else's. I'd like to suggest that this person, if they think of themselves a Christian, re-read the Gospel of Matthew, something that many people posting here might benefit from.
A lot of these bums are mental cases, and it was brought on by drugs and booze.
ReplyDeleteAnd some of them are dangerous.

ReplyDeleteThis chick can buy cigarettes. She obviously isn't starving.
ReplyDeleteNice try with the video, kid, but you got scammed.
Mental Health is always the first thing cut in a govt budget. NEVER cut a well run mental health program. Your city will suffer for many years.
