"In 1968, WHB Radio in Kansas City was one of America's leading top 40 radio stations. In the early 2000s, I came in contact with Bud Carter, who had been WHB's News Director in the late 1960s. He gave me a tape recording that he had made while working at the station consisting of a radio station composite of the station's news coverage of the 1968 Kansas City riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The composite was made for the station's sales department so they could demonstrate to potential advertising clients the quality of WHB's news coverage of breaking stories that the WHB News department was known for at the time. I have simply taken that composite, wrapped some old WHB jingles around it and added pictures I found through the Kansas City Public Library's awesome website. It is with the utmost humility and respect that I offer this video as a way of preserving this important historical record, and as a small gift from me to the world in commemoration of Black History Month, 2016. I hope you enjoy."

Actually I thought the clip was very informative. I was only a couple of months old when all of this happened and I remember my parents talking about it years later. I thought the clip was very well done.

ReplyDeleteJust walked out of the Denny's off Broadway across from the Kauffman Center because of the horrible customer service. No coincidence that it was an all black staff. Went to Chubby's and witnessed similar behavior from the black staff but not the white staff. There's a unbelievable sense of entitlement in the African American community. This is an important part of KC history. It should not be ignored.
ReplyDeleteI was a young woman working on the Plaza at the time. I remember seeing the National Guard with their rifles on the rooftops, ready to shoot to kill our own citizens. I NEVER want to witness that again, and I hope my children and grandchildren don't see it either. I remember how fearful white citizens were that the Negroes (not referred as black at that time) were coming to get us. I cannot blame them, but the irony is that the rioters destroyed their own community, not the white neighborhoods. I think we are still affected by this riot because so much of the area that was destroyed was not rebuilt. Whole neighborhoods with stores and businesses serving the community disappeared. Even if somebody tried to rebuild a business, insurance was almost impossible to obtain at any cost. Whites and law abiding blacks left in droves. Such a waste!
