Kansas City Urban League Difference Maker Awards Luncheon And State Of The Nation

By far, this week the most important event for the KCMO elite was the Urban League Difference maker awards luncheon . . . The gathering hosted a virtual who's-who of Kansas City politicos, activists and denizens.

The overwhelming sentiment was that leader Gwen Grant works tirelessly to benefit the urban core and her efforts have helped sustain an organization with a 95 year history that is currently undergoing a renaissance.

There was signing, schmoozing and a great deal of camaraderie but by far the highlight of the gala was the keynote address from Marc Morial, National Urban League president when he said:

"It's a gut-wrenching experience for us to live in these times and to be witnesses once removed to all the violence we've seen. And the common denominator is violence, whether it's a criminal act . . . Whether it's a police officer using excessive force on a citizen, whether it's an act of terrorism . . . The common denominator is something awry in the human instinct that hurting someone and taking another person's life is a solution to an issue or a solution to a problem. We must, as a nation, and as a world, figure out how we confront this or the very fabric of who we are as a society is eroded if every time we see someone, we are in fear. We're scared of each other . . . Scared of people who don't think like us, who don't worship like us, we're scared of people we may trust and love because we don't know what they're up to on the Internet. This is corrosive to America, to the community and to the globe . . ."

More in a bit . . .

I hope Maurice Glover will someday appropriate honors for his service to the community. He is truly great man.

  3. "Pardon me", said Mr. Commonsense......"but could you please explain any significant difference which the Urban League has made in KCMO in the last 30 years?"

Some find it downright unsettling when a small group of people choose to enrich themselves and create a permanent employment position in which they enjoy solid middle-class status, all the while riding on the backs of a primarily disadvantaged minority class for whom they purportedly advocate.

  4. Arrogant, self aggrandizing, backslapping event by the Urban league and the rest of the grifters. What an extremely large load of crap.
