Right now on Kansas City social media there's a firestorm brewing over a tragic bit of signage on the Country Club Plaza.
To wit . . .
KANSAS CITY RAGES OVER A CALLOUS SIGN OFFERING PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE ADVICE AGAINST GIVING TO HOMELESS ASKING FOR HELP!!!
Take a closer look at this note posted throughout the luxury entertainment and shopping district near where homeless and panhandlers congregate.

WHAT DO YOU THINK??? IS THIS KANSAS CITY DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE HOMELESS OR MERELY FRIENDLY ADVICE TO SHOPPERS???
To put this in the proper context, Kansas City has been exceptionally cruel to the less fortunate as of late. An ordinance against people feeding the homeless and a not-so-long ago description of panhandlers as "visual blight" are part of this town's divisive history when it comes to the PUBLIC STREETS of this entertainment district.

DeleteKansas City is a great place to be homeless. Lax panhandling ordinances and enforcement along with free meals from numerous churches. Some churches deliver meals to different parts of town. Harvesters pulls a big semi trailer to the ghetto for free grub.

Trust me, they do. I have FIVE of them and no heart to shoot them. Seen the price of Purina catfood? They got pretty skinny but lived last summer on their own.
But I started refeeding them when it got cold, they look healthier but await twice a day for my feedings. Even so, only a couple of them are friendly enough to pet in thanks.
So what shall we do about those so willing to take free food than go out and work?
I know a fam member or two happy to take foodstamps and not work too hard.
THis is why I don't protest if the REPUBS don't re-up an unemployment extension.
But I also blame Republicans for not raising the min wage so THAT WAGE will be high enough to pay for health care, the cost of transportation and child care for willing people to work!
Henry Ford taught us already to pay a wage high enough to buy the cars his workers made.... or another way, a wage high enough to survive.
I'm not sure today's Republcians have that same realistic notion. Today, it's all about GREED.
Another lesson. If YOU'RE the one leading in a game of Monopoly... what do you want to do.
Be kind and generous to your friends and play into the night, having fun, or bankrupt them EARLY so you can go to bed satisfied you destroyed your friends?
Think about that on a national level.

ReplyDeleteI hhave had the privilege to run a mens shelter. I agree with this sign. The first quarter a homeless person panhandles starts a downward path to dependency. When you give a panhandler money you become a enabler of the downward spiral. Yes show your concern but donate to a legitimate homeless agency.

Some people are homeless because of plain bad luck or stupid living. But I had a guy working for me this summer who was homeless so to speak for three years. He just said fuck it and took a long vacation from it all as he explains it. Claims between shelters and hand outs wasn't to bad a gig to do. According to him was always food to be had and if one didn't mind sleeping outside some was a rather fun three years.

I've never offered money to anyone. That said, I've bought coffee, breakfast sandwiches, fruit, etc from QT and given to the guy out front (he always takes and and says thank you). I've bought dog food for a guy I see with a dog (he always takes it and says thank you). I'm on the plaza infrequently, but I've never had the guys asking for money harrass or pester you when you say no. They are, at least, more polite than the ones in other cities (San Fran, NY, Atlanta, etc)

About 4 pm each day he will walk up JC Nichols park to Westport. He used to roll into Loy Edges cigar dive, buy a couple of $15 dollar cigars and roll on up Broadway to his "LOFT".
