ReplyDeleteI was so involved with shopping this year. I had to travel to Columbia to get a good deal on a car. It seemed it took the entire holiday to adjust to all the new features that are available. Then a drunk clipped my mirror as I took a wide left turn. I followed him to get his insurance information. He tried to lose my track but once I realized their had been a murder in the parking lot of his apartment complex this year I just thought I would be in the Holiday Spirit and let it go.

ReplyDeleteIf you need food, you do NOT stand on a street corner begging from strangers day after day. There are numerous places in town where generous individuals provide food (meal or bag of groceries) on a no questions asked basis.
I suspect that if the reporter had actually investigated this woman's situation, we would learn a story with interesting details.
She's ending her first year of homelessness? Really?
Her priority is going out on the street corner every day? Taking care of her man?
Why would you beg cash from strangers when you can sign up for food stamps, assistance programs, etc.?
The reporter did a sloppy job on this one.
Some people are challenged, 9:42, and either not aware of options or unwilling or unable to complete the paperwork involved to help themselves.
ReplyDeleteSomeone I know has Aspbergers and has had 39 of the 40 quarters required to qualify for Social Security and Medicare for about 30 years. Rather than work a few weeks to get that last quarter in, he's complained about his situation. Everyone I know tried to get him to help himself, but to no avail. Now he's in an assisted living facility and on Medicaid.

I think the point of 9:42 was that the story doesn't add up, the cash collected is likely going for non-food, non-essential items. Why didn't the story explain where the boyfriend is, and why isn't he working? Is he sending her out into the cold to beg every morning? And, this is the type of story commonly done by white suburban or Plaza-dwelling reporters who don't have a clue.
I remember walking the VA after they amputated legs from from Homeless Vets camping out in subzero weather. A cold winter will kill off quite a few poor people but not nearly enough as the Spirit Of Christmas invokes culling the heard.
ReplyDelete9:42 is right. She's young, she's able bodied. How did she become homeless? What's her bum of a man doing? Those two questions would have answered a lot. Her "man" probably told her to either go out and beg or go out and suck dick, and she chose begging.
