TKC EXCLUSIVE: KANSAS CITY RALLIES AGAINST KEMPER ARENA DEMOLITION AND AMERICAN ROYAL SUBSIDY PLAN!!!

The local mainstream media is keeping quiet about the groundswell against City Hall plans for Kemper Arena/American Royal.

To wit . . .

LIKE IT OR NOT . . . OUR TKC BLOG COMMUNITY HAS FIRST NEWS OF GROWING PUBLIC SENTIMENT AGAINST CITY HALL PLANS FOR KEMPER ARENA DEMOLITION AND AMERICAN ROYAL SUBSIDY!!!

Denizens of our blog community have been linking an upcoming meeting for a few days . . .

Here's the latest note . . .

Citizens for Responsible Government:

"Here is another attempt by City Hall to spend the voters (our) money ($40,000,000) for a project that benefits very few local residents. This is money that will be taken away from libraries, schools and other maintenance projects that need attention and benefit most or all the voters. Putting another burden on the backs of local taxpayers to finance projects for businesses or groups which do not represent the majority of the voters, is just wrong. NOW please call or email your councilperson and the mayor and let them know this is an improper use of YOUR money. Tell them to not approve resolution 140949. Remember we still owe $30,000,000 on Kemper Arena now were going to add another $40,000,000? It’s your money!! Mayor and councilpersons contact information is below.. Please speak up!"

More . . .

"The City Council Planning and Zoning and Finance Committees will hold a joint hearing this Thursday morning, November 13, 10:30 a.m., at the KCMO City Hall, 10th Floor Hearing Room, on a resolution (copy attached) to DEMOLISH KEMPER ARENA and issue $20.0 million in new city debt to build a replacement arena that will be given to the American Royal Association, plus pay the American Royal Association $1.0 million a year for the next 20 years."

Again . . .

LIKE IT OR NOT THIS NOTE HAS BEEN PRETTY MUCH HIDDEN ON FB WITH LESS THAN HALF A DOZEN SIGNING UP OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS . . . AND SO OUR BLOG COMMUNITY IS PUTTING THIS IMPORTANT COMMUNITY MEETING ON BLAST FIRST AND BEFORE ANY OTHER NEWS OUTLET!!! NATCH.

It's a shame that these low-key daytime meetings are used to justify City Hall dictates but politicos regularly use the testimony of consultant and paid-off supporters during the day to justify their patronage.

  1. Why hasn't The Star reported on this meeting? I really want to know.

It's kind of sad that these setup testimonies are the justification for a very substantial tax break. Too bad our elected leaders aren't more responsible with public funds.

  2. Because The Star is not prone to misinterpreting facts the way you guys are. It's about starting the process of negotiating with the American Royal - do you clowns think there's a wrecking ball out there right now?

There's a lot to sort through - old arrangements, agreements, plus the whole divestment idea.

It'll take time but rest assured no one in their right mind wants to SAVE KEMPER.

I swear, if this blog was a house, I'd set it on fire with everybody inside.

  3. The Royal is a 503(c)(2) and doesn't pay taxes anyway.

The star takes orders from Kemper just like Sly.

    Shame on them.

  5. The KC Star is no friend of the American Royal. Just read all their opinion pieces. But they to have looked at all the real math and know this is the best option. The bonds from the expansion of Kemper are nearly paid off, those payments will be reallocated to this new plan which doesn't cost any new money and fulfills the lease obligation. The fact that these organizers think there is still money owed and this is adding to the amount for a total of $70 million shows how little they know any facts of this. Read the Business Journal article. It explains the reality without the bias of Yael and Company.

Kemper is an important piece of architecture that must be save at all costs...I remember when the roof caved in on this well-designed gem.

  7. I wanted that dump with a hump torn down ever since the Independence Event Center opened. With SC and the IEC what's the reason to keep Krmper? Tate it down and build condos for the hipsters who want to live in the barrio.

  8. Looks like the Save Kemper crowd has set up a Go Fund Me site to collect for the historic designation application. This will fail because the "basketball hump" added in the 90's ruined the integrity of the historic designation. It is also interesting that the super rich 1%er leader of the movement, Bill Haw, has donated a whopping $5 to the cause. Man, he must really think people are stupid. And he would be right. http://www.gofundme.com/h4ro2w

  9. The real story is that this scenario has been "wired" all along. The city will be paying for the "New Royal" for at least 3 more decades. Just so Neil Patterson's wife can dress up in her English riding get-up and ride her pony around in circles. So Upper-Crust!

  10. Fuck the American Royal....old one and new one.
