Ferguson: Is Media To Blame?
Darren Wilson was NOT indicted by the grand jury for shooting Michael Brown. Brown an unarmed 18 year old malcontent, who weighed in at 290 pounds and stood around six feet four inches, attacked Wilson after a store theft in Ferguson. The city is just outside St. Louis and is predominantly black. The incident happened this summer on August 8th.
After the shooting the media got hold of it and made it a national 'tragedy.' Of course riots and unrest followed where blacks of course burn down their own neighborhoods and beat on each other for the most part. Brilliant. Did they really care what happened, some but not most. Was it an excuse to behave badly, burn down local business and rob and loot, for most YES.
It was a punch at the white man but lands on the black man.
Bottom line of what seems to have happened: A very large angry 18 year old black person went into a small store pushed around the little owner/mgr. stole some food and acted crazy all on tape. Later the same balck 18 year old the size of an NFL tackle is walking down the middle of the street. A police officer pulls over to him asks what gives. Words are exchanged officer tells him to halt. The 18 year old blocks the police officers door so he can't get out and begins to hit him through the window. Officer is struck several times. Finally does get out, youth won't stop. They fight over cops gun. Youth walks away calls the cop a pussy when officer says stop or I'll have to shoot. The youth turns and like a mad bull charges the much smaller officer who is alone. Cop says youth reaches inside his pants possibly for a gun, officer fears for his life shoots the 18 year old several times. He keeps coming. The officer said he never saw such a crazy mad charge, "like he wanted to run through bullets to get at me" said Wilson. Finally the 18 year went down and died. Photos show officer was beaten around the face.
GET THIS: THE JURY HAD 9 WHITES AND 3 BLACKS. They found the officer NOT GUILTY.
The media has made this a story about 'when will the riot happen if the police officer is not indicted' helping to encourage a riot in my opinion. Poor judgement. Of course the city did riot with the verdict again burning local businesses and beating on each other, not whites. Yes, stealing everything in sight. Fun night. We've seen it several times.
When a black man killed several innocent people in KC over a car jacking a few months ago, did whites protest. These people did nothing to him. He killed for no reason really. Happens all the time in cities all over America.
There is no good answer to this insane behavior. Do the cops fear young blacks, you bet. Does this add to the problem. Yes. Why. BAD BEHAVIOR AND OFTEN. Why. Hate. Simply hate. Our lives suck and whitey its your fault. IS IT?

ReplyDeleteRegardless of what (you or I think) happened, the institutions that are supposed to serve the community failed that same community. This was not a "not guilty" verdict but rather a decision not to indict (or press charges against) an individual based on the evidence presented as it was presented. From well before the moment this episode began, the institutions of law enforcement and community leadership failed to gain the trust, respect, and authority needed to serve and protect. What began as jaywalking or whatever "red flag" led to initial contact quickly escalated to confrontation undoubtedly fueled by emotions and pre-existing biases on both sides.
ReplyDeleteIt is ironic that the police force responded with heavy military equipment, yet the officer was not equipped with so much as a body camera, a dash camera, or even a taser to subdue the individual he stopped. It is curious that a 6' 4" 210 lb trained police officer (a convenient fact Mr. Glazer omits) would put himself in a position to feel threatened (much less overwhelmed) by a 6' 4" 290 lb person walking down the street.
By all accounts the encounter was brief and clearly fatal, and yet the body was allowed to lay in the street for four and a half hours, which was just the beginning of yet another series of institutional failings that disrespected Michael Brown, his family, and the community. Failure to identify Officer Wilson for more than a week while disparaging the victim elevated the distrust in the process of justice.
The militarized response by law enforcement and a number of other missteps by local, county, state, and federal institutions almost dared the community to respond with violence. The late night announcement virtually guaranteed an emotional explosion with a prime time audience. One could almost hear a primal scream of "LOOK AT US" coming from all sides -- the protestors, the police, and the media.
I would suggest that there is no "bottom line" to be found, but rather a lowest common denominator of behaviors, an absence of honest dialogue about the root cause of these behaviors, and a seemingly insurmountable challenge with regard to building the trust, respect, and authority required in a civilized society.
No one has claim to the high road at this moment.
Having known Glazer since the late 80's, I find him almost impossible to tolerate...so I just avoid him like the plague. But on this column, the Polar Bear agrees 100%.

ReplyDeleteI have served on a Grand Jury...please, please, please....I am sick and tired of so many people commenting that a Grand Jury determines guilt........WE DON'T.....The only thing a Grand Jury does is hear evidence of an event, and determine whether there is reason to file charges....PERIOD...end of story.

It just means there is no probable cause to believe officer Wilson committed any criminal homicide at all. So now let the lawyers file their civil suits.
