Looks like the battle compete against Kansas City Congressman Cleaver his heating up and right now Missouri 5th District Candidate Michael Burris is calling out his GOP competition.
New district lines have changed this contest a bit but Congressman Cleaver still seems to have the advantage . . .
Here's a note from the Michael Burris camp calling out Jacob Turk and Bill Lindsey residency . . .
Money quote . . .
We think residency issues in the 5th District Congressional race matter to local voters.
"A quick check by the Michael Burris for Congress campaign revealed that 2 of the 4 Republican candidates for Missouri’s 5th Congressional District don’t even live within the geographic boundaries of the 5th District.
"Jacob Turk and political newcomer Bill Lindsey, both running for the Republican nod in the August 5 primary, actually live within the boundaries of the 6th Congressional District in the city of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
"Michael Burris grew up, works, and lives in Missouri’s 5th District. Burris believes that when it comes to representing 5th district voters, residency matters. “How can you truly represent the interests of district voters if you don’t even live in the district?” Burris asks. “I don’t think anybody likes the idea of having a political outsider come along and ask for your vote.” Burris continued, “It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to separate the political interests of the district in which you reside from the interests of the voters in the district you hope to represent.”

DeleteNothing like GOP gerrymanding. If the map of the 5th district doesn't piss you off you are either conservative or stupid. But at the end of the day the republicans don't have a chance due to their own efforts.
ReplyDeleteWho's this Burris fella? I like the cut of his jib.
ReplyDelete@6:49 Perhaps I'm stupid. Is the point of cutting Lee's Summit out to lump all the Democrats into the 5th and put Lee's Summit which I am assuming is Republican, into an already strong Republican area?
ReplyDeleteIf you are a Democrat in the 5th I don't see how you lose.
Am I stupid because the Democrats would favor the current 5th being split between two districts and thus face a one in the hand, two in the bush scenario?
Vote out Cleaver. His ass doesn't need a taxpayer funded paycheck anymore.
ReplyDeleteGo white democrat!!
Take the skid loader to DC.
ReplyDeleteI think anyone who is a resident of MO can run for congress in any district. You do not need to reside in the district.
ReplyDeleteIt only makes sense since once someone goes to Washington they never live in their home state again.
The districts were drawn up by the Repblican controlled House in Jeff City in 2011. And yes, they carved out the heart of Lee's Summit to pack more republicans into the 6th district (???) Represented by Sam Graves. Is it stupid? Does it help Cleaver? Yes and yes.
ReplyDeleteSo just what has Graves done for Lee's Summit? Anything? By carving out 12-14k republican votes it makes the 5th district reliably democratic until 2022. Way to go Jeff City!
This Burris guy seems to get it, and from the looks of it he understands work and the 5th district.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, how can anyone think that Turk is the way to go? This is his fifth time running and does anyone know what he actually does for a living besides run for and lose against Cleaver?
As for Cleaver, do we really want to send back the guy who is having his congressional paycheck garnished for defaulting on a government loan? Not to mention the fact that things have only got worse for his constituents since he took office.
The best way to get rid of the Rev is to elect HRC in 2016. She then puts Cleaver in charge of HHS, and presto, you got rid of Cleaver!
ReplyDeleteSeriously folks, with the core of KC being largly black, and Jeff City carving 15k republicans in LS into the 6th, this seat is Cleavers as long as he wants to be a Congressman.
The current lines were clearly to draw Turk out and give Cleaver an advantage. Just shows how big of a crook Cleaver really is. These lines were NOT republican drawn, as much as dem's would like you to believe that.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't Turk and Lindsey run against their incumbent Congressman, Sam Graves? What makes them think they have what it takes to represent voters in a district in which they don't even live? This is like someone from Independence running for city council in Raytown. Seems a little arrogant or paternalistic to me.
