Taxpayer Group Urges Jackson County Voters To Oppose Question One

- On the Nov. 5 ballot, Jackson County Voters will be faced with a massive $800 million tax increase-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Americans for Tax Reform urges Jackson County voters to oppose Ballot Question One during the November 5 election. The ballot measure would enact a staggering $800 million sales tax increase in Jackson County, hurting consumers and small businesses alike.

Proponents of Question One argue that the tax increase will help draw high-tech medical jobs to Jackson County, but as the Kansas City Star (a media outlet not normally friendly to local taxpayers) notes:

“To urge a “no” vote is not a happy place for this newspaper. It’s easy to root for a major translational research hub and the talented researchers it may draw. We simply don’t see an additional tax on one county’s shoppers, be they individuals or businesses, as the primary path to that goal.”

“Jackson County voters should reject Question One at the polls on November 5,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, “An increase in the county sales tax would only place further burden on local consumers and small businesses.”

Norquist continued, “With neighboring Kansas growing their economy by lowering their tax rates, it would be nuts for a border county like Jackson to increase their local tax burden.”
