Craig Glazer Talks The Future Of Comedy

TKC Note: Interesting, I didn't know Craig was a client of the legendary CAA founded by Hollywood shark Michael Ovitz and one of the first companies to incorporate The Art Of War by Sun Tzu into their biz philosophy. Here's Craig's weekend note:

Dan Soder: The Guy Code

If you’re like me, and fell in love with Chris Pine as a leading man when you saw him playing Jim Kirk in the Star Trek remake a couple years ago, then Dan Soder is your guy. Soder is one of the young, hot comics that Stanfords is presenting to Kansas City for the first time as we have the other top ten comics from the Montreal Comedy Festival over the last several months. Dan is somewhat unique in that not only is he very funny, but has that rare movie star manly presence. In other words, if he were in a film, be it a comedy or a drama, and he threw a punch and hit someone, you’d believe it.

Unlike most thirty year olds, Soder knows who John Wayne, Paul Newman, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are. That’s cool right there. Dan does a lot of material on how living in New York is not so bad, and why he really hates Hollywood, though he works there often. Soder is originally from San Francisco but most of his comedy career was built in Denver where he came up with comedy sensation TJ Miller.

The last three years of his comedy career have been on fire with three television shows including The Guy Code, Red Eye and Mansome. Just this past March he did his first appearance on Conan. He followed that with his first Comedy Central half hour special. Comedy Central has signed him to an animated TV series which is in the works now.

We’ve tried harder than most top clubs all around America to bring in the top young stars this past year including Nick Vatterott, Brent Morin, Rory Scovel and now Dan Soder, to name a few. What these comics have in common is that they are all fresh faces in television shows that will dominate the ha-ha landscape over the last several years. Two years ago we introduced you to many others including Nikki Glaser, Iliza Shlesinger, TJ Miller and Jim Jeffries. We all know how their careers are going today. Miller is the new Adam Sandler; the others all have their own television series.

There have been many others. What is often disturbing is that people will often comment that we are bringing back a name like ‘Screech’, Michael Winslow or Jimmy ‘JJ’ Walker again. We do that because there is a demand to see these entertainers just like there is a demand to see fresh young comedy faces. With that said, it’s much harder to sell the new guys even though they have many TV and movie credits due to the market being so unfocused with hundreds of TV Channels, the Internet and Social Media.

Because I am a client of Creative Artists Agency, the biggest talent agency in the world, Stanfords is often given the first opportunity at these new, young stars because they represent most of them.

You need to see these young fresh stars early on because when they explode, like Jim Jeffries did, they move from the comedy club circuit to the arena circuit much faster than they used to. So try and get out this weekend to see one of these young guns, Dan Soder. If you heard him on radio this week I am sure you were as impressed as I was. If you are a Jim Jeffries fan, his management is supplying us with the next two phenoms from the UK and Down Under, coming this fall. Just call us at (913)400-7500 for tickets and more information.

  1. This guy has been on Red Eye (think Fox News version of The Daily Show or Real Time with Bill Maher), and he is actually pretty hilarious.

This is one of the 'caught em on the way up" rather than the "caught them on the way down" shows.

  3. The American dream is to be less successful in life than your parents?

The American dream is to serve time in prison?

The American dream is to be close enough to hear your best friend get shot in an ambush, then run in the other direction?

The American dream is to keep reminding people that you were, at best, a minor footnote in the history of Kansas City twenty or thirty years ago?

The American dream is to be 60, dye your hair to look 30, and make unwanted sexual advances toward women young enough to be your granddaughter?

The American dream is to become such a schifoso that your dad lambastes you in public, you have to pay Tony Botello to publish your semi-coherent ramblings on his blog, and you wake up alone each morning?

The American dream is to have your story on the cover of this magazine so that anyone who reads it can see you for the self-centered, morally bankrupt, misogynistic misanthrope you really are?

If so -- congratulations, Craig. Good for you! It's nice to see people fulfill their dreams.

  6. @5:08 PM - That's quite a screed there wild man!

Should we talk about your life for a second?

    Didn't think so.

Hope your far away location is treating you well.

  7. I can't comment until I know what Craig's bitch harlinator thinks. He has to lead us with his always right opinion...so Craig, get him off his knees so he can type.

  8. The state of comedy in Kansas City will improve exponentially the day Craig Glazer takes a permanent dirtnap. The sooner, the better.

  9. Hey, Craig -- oops, "Wild Man": Someone ripped 5:08 off from the Pitch. I know because I wrote it. Is there anything in the "screed" that's not true?

    Didn't think so.

By the way, I like what you've done with the club. Looks like there's new duct tape holding the ceiling tiles together in the men's room. That's a nice touch.

Enjoy sleeping alone tonight -- again. On the other hand, you've always got Rosy Palm and her five sisters.

  13. I read these comments with two things in mind, one the incredible jealousy and despair of the 'hate' group. I'm quite sure almost none of them know Craig Glazer. I read about him and hear him on the radio often. He is an interesting person to say the least. I have been to both Westport and Legends, did not make it out to their other location. Legends is a wonderful and expensive facility, has to be one of the nicest in the country.

My other thought is seeing Craig Glazer's photo on the cover of that local paper. You'll enjoy this, my wife said, "movie star good looks" and she is a looker at 45. We don't him personally. I'm sure he must have stepped on someones feelings here and there, but your comments are usually childish and one would think untrue. I can't believe most anything you write 'hate' group. His presence and the facts I see prove almost nothing you gentleman say to be accurate or true.

  14. yes 'wild man' 5:08 is smartman. The guy Glazer bested several times, the guy who failed to show up when he challenged Glazer to fight. Glazer showed up proving he is the brave man we know him to be and his life is based on, smartman represents all the hateful cowards on sites like this and ohters. Craig is not the only person of note who gets gunned daily. THEY ALL DO.

Just today I was reading how BRAD PITT's popularity had fallen to an alltime low, his career in shambles. Really he just put out his biggest all time him film that has grossed 400 million world wide. World War Z. Guess getting to be 50 makes him a loser huh.

Much like our boy Glazer is a loser. Surrounded by more beautiful women that he can handle, fast cars, night club life with film and televsion stars weekly at his side. Must be tough.

  15. Improv staffer7/13/13, 2:34 PM

I read all this crap on Glazer from Stanford and Sons. Met him a few times at radio in Westport. Guy couldn't have been nicer. Here we compete with them but he even would shake hands with me and my comics. Always. Once he took us to breakfast with his comic. Funny person up close. Been to their club once, very nice. So is ours. I left the Improv this past winter, but enjoyed working in the comedy world. Glazer is a character and most comics all respect him and their club. We do. Or did.

  16. Sure he wasn't trying to steal your acts away?

  17. Too Hot Too Handle7/13/13, 3:20 PM

Saw Glazer's photos in the story out last week. Hot guy. Hair is dyed, not real, which is it, don't do both. I'd say it looks fucking sexy. My sister works as a cocktail waitress at Woodside pool, seen the man twice, both times had the best looking babe at the pool and he is twice their age for the most part. Playa, playa. I want some.

  18. Glazer gets fewer and fewer comments each week. The "I don't give a shit what he has to say" factor is kicking in.

  20. The Real Harley7/13/13, 6:39 PM

Smartman, this was a piece on this weeks comic. It was not a story that most would comment on basement guy. Just haters like you. His last couple stories got what 60,70 comments. I know you had at least 10, wheres the toilet salesman, Super Dummy? On a date with a hooker? Oh he can't afford one. Right, like you basement time.

  21. The Pitch is killing Glazer and we love it

  22. Look at the Pitch comments none really for Glazer and not a one was from one of Glazers so called haters. Grow up you people Glazer made half these comments here or more saying how great he is.

  23. Work at Woodside desk. Glazer is there four times a week, works out, weekends at pool sometimes. This year he's brought at least four or so damn nice looking females. Two are new, two he has dated off and on for a few years. All in their 20's maybe 3o ish no more. One could be a Playboy centerfold for sure. All nice. How does he do it. Guy is in good condition, works out. Funny. Nice to all. I like him. Hey when his article came out in the Pitch someone turned all the cover stories over so you couldn't see Glazer's face. We caught the person, he said he was only joking. Lots of jealous people out there. Craig is a solid guy.

  24. Thank you, Craig. Now go get a REAL life.
