This Sunday it's important for Kansas City to learn the difference between trashy public relations stunts and REAL civic work.
To wit . . .
TKC BLOGGING HAS HELPED TO CLEAN UP KANSAS CITY WHILE MAYOR SLY JAMES IS BUSY PLAYING TRASH MAN!!!
Let's explain the sitch . . .
On Saturday morning Mayor Sly dragged the City manager and a bunch of reporters outside to clean up trash for about an hour. He then gave a stern warning about reporting illegal dumping to the City''s 311 line that only works about half the time.
Meanwhile . . .
A little more than a month ago TKC called out MODot for dumping on Kansas City's Westside . . .
We also sent messages and encouraged others to press our City Council and State Reps on the issue.
Look at the difference . . .
NOW, THANKS TO TKC TIPSTERS, READERS AND FRIENDLY POLITICOS . . . WE HAVE CLEANED KANSAS CITY'S WESTSIDE WITH THE HELP OF MODOT!!!
This didn't require TKC to pose for cameras or pretend to be a trash man . . . Nope, we do what we do here @ TKC and very often our discourse influences the way Kansas City works. This is just one notable example of the strength of FREE SPEECH AND THE 1ST AMENDMENT AT WORK AND CLEANING UP KANSAS CITY!!!
What's the lesson?
Mayor Sly's "leadership by public relations stunt" routine is wearing thin. Kansas City has real problems and a Mayor more concerned with his image isn't going to fix things. Kansas City doesn't need someone pretending to be a trash man for an hour . . . Instead it's important for Mayor Sly to get his hands dirty doing the tough legislative work required to really clean up this town.
Accordingly . . .
IF MAYOR SLY REALLY WANTS TO STOP ILLEGAL DUMPING THEN HE SHOULD WORK TO BRING BANG BACK SCHEDULED, MONTHLY BULKY ITEM PICK-UP!!!
The current system clearly isn't working for neighborhoods beset by illegal dumpers (ew) . . . And this problem is more important than the toy train or downtown hotel currently occupying most of the Mayor's time and Kansas City's resources. Natch.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the post regarding bulky item trash pick up. Currently the city engages in an appointment only pick up cycle. Lord have mercy, just how penny wise/ pound foolish can a city manager be?
Regular sweeps keep our tip fees down. Those scrap metal scavengers have a cycle to follow, people who repair our broken items know when and where to troll the city. Many, many items are saved from the refuse truck thus up-cycling and saving a lot of tonnage which reduces tip fees.
Now how damn hard is that to understand?
the thing is, our Mayor was never engaged in neighborhood level activities. He does not know how to interact with the residents. His scolding is pure bullshit.
Sly loves trains and not KC. Our mayor just does what he is told.

He WILL be voted out for ignoring basic city services, but the damage he will leave behind is incalculable with his toy train concept and other eco devo cronyism. ReplyDeleteThe City has prosecuted illegal dumpers for years. "Kansas City Mayor Sly James said the city plans to start making an example of those who get caught illegally dumping their trash by pressing charges." Wake up Mr. Mayor. The City used to have two full time inspectors who set up cameras, dug through trash, and interviewed witnesses to get convictions in court. Two was a bad joke, but now the City just cut that number in half to one inspector. One person, no matter how dedicated, can do nothing to curb the dumping epidemic.

I agree. However, not going to happen. They are broke and going to get more so because we need - want a toy train. Sly will never stop going for the photo op over substance. He doesn't want to work that hard.
