Kansas City has attempted to provide incentives to deter bad behavior among a very small segment of local, urban youth time and again; the impact of these efforts has never produced long lasting results.
Sadly, Kansas City Star Columnist Mary Sanchez seems to think that throwing money at a problem is the best solution.

Really, I'm not sure how cracking down on parking is going to help anybody and we all know that Kansas City raids just about every tax fund for other pet projects . . . At some point, that cash will be sent the way of the new Downtown Hotel or the Streetcar.
What's more disappointing is the tried, true and lame tactic that hasn't changed in the writing of Mary Sanchez for more than a decade . . . She uses tough talk directed against minorities in order to arrive at an ultra-progressive solution/conclusion that doesn't really help anybody - Maybe what this town really needs is some creative thinking that doesn't involve more taxes created as a panicked response to something as silly as a Twerk Fest.

ReplyDeleteWhat you and the Mayor fail to understand is that these teens HAVE alternatives. They can go to the park and play basketball, throw a football, or play on the jungle gyms. They can go to the Plaza, Westport, Crown Center, Oak Park Mall, Independence Center for a movie, shopping, or a meal. They can go roller skating, bowling, ride a bike, go fishing in Swope Park. They can get a job, seek out a church event, go to the library, or help do something productive in their neighborhood.
All of those alternatives are relatively sex- and violence-free. AND they can spend as much or as little of their money doing them as they like.
What is wrong with these alternatives? I'll tell you what's wrong. These kids do not know how to behave. Pure an simple. Blame it on their parents, the shools, society or the choices they make. Doesn't really matter. Bottom line is they do not know how to behave civilly in public.
What you are really asking is that taxpayers pick up the tab to babysit these kids. And it's just my opinion, but I don't think most taxpayers agree that is a public obligation.
Don't want to behave? Go home. Or go to jail. It really is just that simple.
