MUST READ: How Kansas City Lost The Kings

And EPIC article from Deadspin reveals taht broken corporate promises and failed eco-devo schemes usually lead the way to cities losing a pro-sports team.

A History Lesson For Sacramento: How Kansas City Lost The Kings

In this old school instance what strikes me as funny is corporate assurances that The Kings would stay in Kansas City right up until the moving fans were warming up outside of their offices.

Also, the fact that Kansas City didn't really care about losing the NBA always struck me as strange . . . Probably racist.

  1. I would think with a little effort, you could look at cities with the same population that do NOT have NBA Teams and compare them to cities that do, and see an increase in murder, rape and assault.

NBA All Star Weekend in Kansas City anyone?

Is it "Racism" if it is true?

The NBA is a thug culture forced down the throats of black kids who ALL fucin think they are gonna party with Kobe and make it rain in the strip clubs.

These cretin fucks are role models for black kids all over America.

It is, as Tony would say, a HUGE fuckin FAIL.

  4. There were two problems with the KC Kings.

The second, lesser one, was that the NBA wasn't very good then. The Finals were being shown late night on tape delay basis, and the Magic/Bird/Jordan revival was just beginning to happen when the Kings left.

The first, however, is the same reason teams aren't lining up to move in now -- the KC market simply isn't big enough or wealthy enough to sustain three major league sports franchises. There are simply not enough diehard NBA fans living in the immediate area to fill an arena on a Tuesday school night in January or February, when the Kings would have the full attention of the city.

And even playoff attendance was pathetic, because they were competing directly against the Royals.

Sane people tried hard to explain that to the "build it and they will come" crowd during the Sprint Center campaign, but no one would listen.

If you look at the NBA map, you will see they are in three types of markets: Smaller markets where they are the only franchise in town; mid-sized markets which have only one other MLB or NFL team to sell season tickets and corporate sponsorships against; and huge markets.

This is why Salt Lake City has an NBA team, and St. Louis does not.

Bottom line again, it wasn't that the fans of the KC Kings didn't support them, it's that by census-count and market size, there weren't possibly enough of them, nor would there ever be.

  7. Let's test chuck's theory, "nba team = more murder, rape, assault"

Using ranking of TV market for the size of the city:

    20. Sacramento-Modesto-Stockton.
    21. St. Louis.
    22. Portland.
    23. Pittsburgh.
    24. Charlotte.
    25. Indianapolis.

    31. Kansas City.
    33. Salt Lake City.
    35. Milwaukee.
    37. San Antonio.

  9. The key is to look where individuals are investing money. I'm not interested in consortia of individuals and corporations coerced by government/development types. Rather, look where individuals plunk down large sums of cash and expect a reasonable return. No one in their right mind is going to put their own cash into another competitor for Kansas City entertainment dollars. At least not until the region has the economic vitality to support it.

    Really? More the the NHL?

Of course, the NHL can't possibly have any thugs, can they? After all, they are pretty much all lilly-white!

  16. Tony, you dumb ass. Racism didn't have anything to do with it. Take a look at that team photo; 2/3 of the team is white. The Kings sucked. The ownership wouldn't spend any money so they could be competitive. Every year they were in the cellar. Then the ownership bitched because no one would come out and spend money on the team. KC didn't lose the Kings, we unloaded them on some other poor saps, i.e. Sacramento.

  17. With the Royals being in the middle of a World Series winning season it helped KC keep its mind off losing the Kings. Hell indoor soccer was drawing double the attendance as the Kings back then & the key thing was marketing & promotion! Kings front office started stripping that team down of marquee talent some time before & when people didnt go (as was their intention) they pulled the plug! KC missed the whole "Jordan Era" which I feel would have given a rebirth of attention to the franchise while it was here. It is true that the NBA tries to keep teams in non competition markets but if Cleveland which demographically is almost the same as KC in population can maintain 3 major league franchises then it is possible for that same model to work here but it would be tough. KC has never been a big arena sports town. Big 12 tourneys are only 1 wk a year of sell out basketball and that well is about to run dry pretty soon given that the Big 12 has no team in the state of Missouri to continue that event here. Its time to look at either finding a main tennant for Sprint Center i.e NBA or NHL or just be content to put a D-League team at the Independence Event Center and keep the 1 NBA/NHL exibition games a year at Sprint Center going status quo. Anyway back on subject, I was 11 when the Kings left town, I was a heartbroken kid. Loved the KC Kings and still do. Sacramento Kings can go to hell! I'll be 39 this year and Im still mad about it. The little kid in me will enjoy this bit of payback if the Kings go to Seattle. It is what it is.
