So a KCPD officer shot our dog this morning.
"At about seven AM our house alarm went off. The homeowner was called. He called the person watching our house at the time, she reported that there was no break in that she knew of and started to check the doors and windows. The homeowner then called the alarm company and said that it was a false alarm. The cops arrived on the scene almost immediately. The dog was outside and the person at the house was on the other side of the house checking the basement door. Rectangle (our dog) ran toward the policemen on our porch. Possibly barking (noone has seen a police report. One of the officers pulled his gun and fired at him point blank. FOUR TIMES. Luckily, he was only shot twice and will hopefully recover after surgery.
The homeowner talked to the Police Sergeant and he confirmed that they knew it was a false alarm. The officers on the scene left before anyone who lives there arrived. The Sergeant said that this behavior was protocol. My roomate is left with a costly vet bill and no explanation for what happened."

I'm 50 years old, a Military Veteran, and conservative. After I left the Navy I worked under the auspices of the Department of Defense for 4 1/2 years in war zones. I have recently been approached by a State Department contractor to go to Haiti to conduct small arms training for Hatian police. I have never used an illegal drug, and have never been arrested. I am the type of guy who "always plays by the rules".

Uhhhh, was the porch fenced in? Was the dog on a leash? Was the officer blinded by a wagging tail that he couldn't focus enough to kill shot the dog? Was the officer a cat lover? Would him being a cat lover a) be in the police report? b) make him by default a P#ssy? Was Rectangle named Rectangle because he was morbidly obese? Did the officer just feel sorry for this morbidly obese "Rectangle" with legs and sympathy shoot him, but couldn't focus because he was crying about how sad the situation was? I'm going to assume that it was irresponsible pet ownership because the dog was on a porch and was able to run up on police. It's not like it was in a fenced in yard with beware of dog signs.

DeleteNo, I don't have it out for cops. I do, however, have a problem with this sick trend of cops immediately resorting to deadly force at the very sight of a dog. In many of the cases I posted above, the cops were called for non-hostile situations. See the first link I posted (http://reason.com/blog/2012/02/28/cop-shoots-dog-three-stories-to-wreck-an), someone called the cops about an ONLINE SCAM, told them she was not at home, but the cops came anyway, jumped her fence, and shot her dog. UNACCEPTABLE. This happens way too often, and the response from the police department is ALWAYS that 'procedures were followed, no wrongdoing took place'. Meanwhile, these families have lost a very dear member, and the cops just seem so cold and uncaring about what they have done.

As for me, I have a concealed firearm permit, and most concealed carry permit holders will agree that cops are nothing more than armed tax collectors (speeding tickets, seatbelt violations, etc), and armed report takers. When a real crime does occur, the police show up, make the chalk outlines, and write the reports. Once in a Blue Moon a cop will stumble across a crime in progress. The overwhelming trend among cops these days is to shout "Officer Safety" and stand back at a considerable distance as the victims are mauled. (Columbine comes to mind)
What concerns most Americans is the Militarization of the police.
Some time back in the 90's police officers quit calling themselves "Police Officer" or "Peace Officers". Police Officers and Peace Officers were members of the communities in which they worked. Their job was to protect the rights of the citizens by enforcing laws where there was a harmed party, or harmed property. They were the good guys, you could count on them to exercize sound judgement and de-escalate potentially volatile situations.
Suddenly our police began wearing paramilitary uniforms and became "Law Enforcement Officers". A Law Enforcement Officer will enforce any law, no matter how egregious, ridiculous, or inapplicable.
At the same time "We the People" became relegated from Citizens, to mere civilians. Citizens have God Given Rights, and ownership of their country. Civilians are members of the indigenous population of a country which is under military occupation.
You "LEO's" need to get it through your heads, that we are not the enemy. You run around shooting peoples dogs, tasing elementary school children, and elderly grand mothers, and shooting harmless mentally ill, or infirm people, because you view yourselves as an occupying army, not a member of a community.
If you dress a cop up like a soldier, give him military weapons, and paramilitary training, this is the predictable result...
Sounds to me like a cop who can't make an educated decision based on a circumstance. I carry a knife and it's been well suited for situations that I've encounted that don't involve someone pointing a gun at my face. I feel as if you can't beat up a dog with the civil weapons you're allowed by law to carry without permit, then maybe you should focus more on why you're such a pussy instead f trying to find justification to shoot an animal. Get a life, maybe if you went to more than a year of training or even had a college degree you'd make better decisions. DeleteYea, pepper spray (which has no IMMEDIATE effect) or use your taser which gives you one shot with probes that spread 6 inches every foot in distance to hit a charging dog that is 2 1/2 ft tall and a foot wide. Both probes have to make contact for ANY effect and you'd have to wait until the dog was about 2 ft from you to have a chance of that happening IF you were to have a shot at the dogs side. Good luck with that...love Monday morning quarterbacks. Tell ya what, buy some pepper spray, a taser and a gun then I'll throw you in the back yard with my Doberman. The police take an oath to enforce those laws. They don't make up their own.
You are then found innocent or guilty by a judge or jury.
Next time you want to complain about a law to a cop remember it was your elected official that enacted that law and asked the cops to enforce it.

The *first* thing the brave peacekeeper warriors did - after getting their stupid asses shot off by the Mt. Now if the public questions the shooting of a dog the cops get all pissed off since the cops can do no wrong. Remember the owner came home to a wounded dog, you bet they want an explanation. KCPD stinks at serving the public their attitude towards an inquiring public demonstrates this. Their attitude is no one in the public should question what they do. Well they are wrong. We the Taxpaying Public pay their salary. We have a right for an explanation and answers.

ReplyDeleteSo I suppose the infamous Hollywood bank robbery shootout would have ended much differently if the cops had just tried to reason with the fellas shooting at them with AK-47's? Police have upgraded their weapons in order to match what they're up against. That incident was a prime example. Prior to that, LAPD didn't carry patrol rifles (only SWAT) and they were definitely outgunned. Guess what, now they do. Its all about being able to defend against an enemy--that being an armed violent criminal, not everyday folk.
Everyone chill. A dog was shot. We don't know all the circumstances involved, only one side of the story as was mentioned earlier. If you'll notice most of the comments are pure speculation.
And before the next douche says something to the effect of "asshole cop" in response to this--I'm not one. Just someone who has the ability to think with a clear head and not get all emotional or riled up in a media frenzy. I'm sure most of you bashing the cops in this whole ordeal think Trayvon was completely innocent of any wrongdoing too.
