South Platte County contracts with the KCFD for Fire and (now) Ambulance service to the tune of HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS every year.
Obviously, part of that contract includes maintaining acceptable ambulance service response times.
WORD IS . . . IN SOUTH PLATTE COUNTY KCFD ISN'T MEETING THOSE REQUIREMENTS AND IT'S BECOMING A STICKING POINT!!!
What's worse . . .
INSIDERS SAY THAT THE CYNICAL RESPONSE FROM SMOKEY'S KCFD ADMINISTRATION HAS BEEN A REQUEST TO EITHER DROP THE RESPONSE TIME PORTION OF THE CONTRACT OR HAVE SOUTH PLATTE COUNTY PAY MORE MONEY TO THE KCFD AND MAYBE OFFER SOME SUGGESTIONS!!!

JUST AS SO MANY TKC TIPSTERS PREDICTED . . . THE MAST MERGER HAS SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS THAT ARE GOING UNFIXED IN TYPICAL KANSAS CITY FASHION!!!
A BAD-ASS TKC TIPSTER NOTES SMOKEY'S "SMOKE AND MIRRORS" APPROACH TO THIS PROBLEM!!!
"When MAST had the contract to serve Southern Platte Co Ambulance District the response times were excellent. When Smokey took over response dropped below contract mandated response levels. Platte Ambulance district notified KCFD that their payment would be cut in proportion to the poor response times. Smokey proposed back either increasing the payments to get better service, or do away with the performance standards. KCFD keeps insurance repayments and gets a fee from So Platte, combined around $800k per year estimated. When asked over last two years to take steps to improve response times, Smokey replies he's "not changing anything."
We've been talking about this ambulance service response time problem for more than a year now.
It gets worse . . .
IT'S UNFAIR TO EXPECT MUCH IMPROVEMENT FOR AMBULANCE SERVICE RESPONSE TIMES WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT KCFD CUTS TO PAY FOR THE USELESS DOWNTOWN TOY TRAIN!!!
I'm not sure what the solution is here . . .
But it's worth remembering that KCFD Chief Smokey Dyer promised a better integration of MAST Ambulance Service into the KCFD and MORE THAN ONE YEAR LATER that has still failed to materialize as the KCFD Chief heads off into retirement.
KC is too big. That's the real problem.

Blame your city council for the merger! Again, they threw this to Smokey and said " Fix this!" this city council we have, has ruined our once great city. Well, along with the thugs on the northeast side. TIF and green impact, urban core, all wastes of money. Now they want to build a toy train and spend millions on a practice soccer field for the Sporting KC soccer team who play in Kansas. Just think about the response times when they cut 105 public safety employees. To the ones that say this is a different batch of money, you are wrong! Everything has to do with your tax dollars and mine. Spend, spend, spend. It hasn't worked for Obama, what makes you think its gonna work for KC.
ReplyDelete8:47, not quite. Local 42 demanded that MAST come under KCFD control. Yes, Council went along with it, but with the mayor at the time, there were legit reasons to change the structure of MAST. Giving it to Local 42 was obviously not the best option. But Local 42 used their usual thuggery to take over MAST. They wanted it, they can't handle it, and now we're paying the price, especially in the northland.

MAST was horrible. What the fuck are you people talking about. It was one of the worst EMS systems in the coutry, and no amount of pencil-fucking their response time stats can fix their abysmal record of patient care and financial mismanagement. The public utility model is a case-study in poor ideas supported only by the grifters who profitted from it, a few internet sycophants, and the EMS union boss thugs who lost their positions in the merger.

The majority of those 105 are cross trained meaning these kids are emts on ambulances and can be detiled to an ambulance when ems is shortstaffed. This is why public safety should come first no layoffs, and no toy trains taking precedence.

The rest of you should have to subscribe to it. That is what is fair. I know the city council wont let the cut fire station near my house since I am in the elite. Sucks to be you poor people wishing you had public safety. They build 175 million dollar buildings for me to watch a ballet. That is why I love being in the top echelon of the city.

But nothing beats the KCFD getting paid more but claiming it's not a raise. maybe we should all try that. "Hey boss, I don't want a raise I just want you to pay me more money." The KCFD feels so entitled they don't even make sense anymore. You guys are parasites.

ReplyDeleteDifferent taxes were voted on for specific things. You cannot use the 1/2 cent sales tax for capital I improvements to pay fire fighters. Period. It is against the law. The fire department has a 129 million dollar budget. They need to continue to provide service with this budget. Period.

pencil-fucking their response time stats 9:47? The KCFD doesn't bother to pencil fuck stats...they just downgrade the call from the start. Non emergency transfer=secure scene with person who has overdosed on dangerous prescription drugs. Over 1 hour response time! People on scene not happy. Non-emergency transfer on a fall? How about fire doing CPR on a person with rigor and lividity? that in itself is funny but probably not so much for the family. Has the Medical Director investigated anything by talking to the families involved or is he happy to just keep the quarter million his medical group gets for being the Medical Director?
ReplyDeleteYou can't expect a miracle when you have a city council that mandates KCFD take over the ambulance, then complain at the cost. The department staffs it as best as they can and city hall complains about the personnel costs. City hall sorceress approved the current labor contract then has the audacity to complain about it when this was on their doing.
ReplyDeleteUntil people realize there is no wall between the ambulance and the fire suppression crews, you will not understand the big picture. Cut 105 jobs and you be cutting the ambulance too. So to cheer job cuts and also complain about response times is foolish.
The real reason the response times are long in south platte is because they kicked the ambulance out of their stations. The fire district doesn't want to fund their own ambulance so they pay a fee to kcfd to do it. Its south plattes own fault for the long response time, if they want better ambulance coverage, hire paramedics and buy some ambulances. They won't do that though because it would cost thousands of times more then what they are paying kcfd.

ReplyDeleteI haven't quite figured out why people hate firemen so much. I am a firemen, work in a busy station and work another job. My wife who is a nurse in a large area hospital works very hard too. We have a child and choose to live in a newer home. We (all KCFD employees) pay the same taxes as you. We don't feel entitled to anything welder, when you are looking down the chance that our city is going to firefighter/emt's we all decided to in the contract that the city agreed to, take wage freezes. In the last year of the contract the city was suppose to pay that back. It was Nov. 25th before we got anything. If you make an agreement to do something you do it, at least that's what I was told as a kid. I'm not greedy but when the starting pay for a firemen is just under $14.00 per hour that's not a lot. If wanting something you had agreed on is being greedy than, I guess I am.
ReplyDeleteI help with others, provide a service for this city. Unless you have some kind of knowlage in this field than don't say anything. I don't know what it's like to be a welder or a computer tech, so you don't hear me bitching about what you do. We go to the store because we have to eat, we pay for all of it. The city doesn't pay for much of any of the things in our stations, at least the one I work at. I am to busy to go to the store on my day off due to spending the time with my family. The store is generaly in the district they protect. The other point is our budget hasn't changed in a few years. Now with rigs getting older and gas going up things still have to be payed for. You don't drop insurance because you haven't used it have you? If so what do you drive so pd can make some money off you.
My point is the general firefighter/emt's in this city are you neighbors and you run into us all the time. Why do you hate us so much just baffles me. What you should be mad at is when they cut us and build a train you won't use and then you need us but we can't. Because there is no more money for fuel or the station is browned out. If anything add more ems rigs, fix the times. And we stage on dangerous calls for our safety. I know that the chances of a gun wielding man to run around OfficeMax isn't that often but you would be shitting bricks then!!
So when you hammer me about my post at least take the time to look at it from our point first befor you speak.
