JimmyCSays provides an important journalism critique of his former employers.
Here's the crux of his argument:
"Neither the study nor the story contained this pivotal, all-important fact: Wrecks caused by people who ran red lights at the 17 intersections dropped from 52 wrecks before the cameras’ arrival to 24 wrecks in the second year after their arrival."
Read the whole thing for yourself . . . It's basically a debate over journalism speed and number crunching . . . ALSO IT'S A DEBATE OVER WHO GETS THE CASH . . . THE CITY VS. THE KCPD YET AGAIN . . . Still, there's a perception out there that Red Light Cameras are just money making machines and the Star did a lot to strengthen that arguement.
Supporters have done their best to emphasize that these cameras do make Kansas City streets safer while critics note flaws in the system along with concerns about surveillance.
Yawn! How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of really critical issue in this burg and this isn't one of them.
Maybe Jimmy needs to spend some time looking at KCPS contracts or where the money all went that was spent on MLK Village, or what happens to the funds spent at the Urban League.
Or the homicides.
This is Tracy Ward's speed.
This a really serious reporting error for The Star.
ReplyDeleteOld Star guys are the best, they have the freedom to dish the goods about their old bosses.
ReplyDeleteSimple, don't run red lights, don't worry about red light camera's.
