THE TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! NOT EVEN MR. PEANUT CAN PICK BETWEEN TWO KANSAS CITY MAYORAL CANDIDATES!!!

Just like it's hard to pick which Jordan Carver pose is my favorite . . . It seems like Kansas City is at a crossroads that even has Mr. Peanut's political mastermind in a quandary.

BY THE WAY, RECENT MAYORAL NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING PANIC PROVES THAT KANSAS CITY POLITICS IS STILL BUSH LEAGUE IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS!!!

Let's review . . .

Mr. Peanut's cash paid for the hit piece against Sly James that Mike Burke quickly disavowed. Mr. Peanut is a BIG donor on the "Citizens for Responsible Spending" Political Action Committee and they funded the TV advert that earned a great deal of (self)righteous indignation.

Later on, Mike Burke and his camp complained about a nasty mailer that hit them across the City and Sly James disavowed any involvement with the negative campaigning. One of the sigs on that piece was the "COMMITTEE FOR INTEGRITY" Political Action Committee and that's funded by Mr. Peanut to the tune of at least $10k.

There's a silly theory that's probably powered by homebrew that this is all some masterful scheme by Mr. Peanut to thrust Mike Burke into Mayoral Power. Sadly, that kind of paranoia is reminiscent of Mayor Funky's tenure that has ultimately led us to this point of Kansas City indecision.

There is no proof or hard evidence about the motivations of Mr. Peanut regarding these adverts other than speculation and loose connections . . . The only thing that is backed up by paperwork is this . . .

ACCORDING TO MISSOURI CAMPAIGN FINANCE FILINGS, MR. PEANUT IS PAYING FOR HIT PIECES AIMED AT BOTH SLY JAMES AND MIKE BURKE!!!

Check the links for yourself . . . It's not exactly a political move worthy of Solomon and really reflects local indecision.

Allow me a brief aside that speaks to where Kansas City stands even more directly . . . NOTICE THAT THE KANSAS CITY STAR REALLY HASN'T PUT THEIR WHOLE ASS INTO BACKING UP THEIR ENDORSEMENT OF SLY JAMES!!!

A rather astute TKC TIPSTER tells us this:

"Question of the day---is this most half-hearted Star endorsement you can imagine for a candidate for Mayor??? Yes, never seen anything like this.

"I think it shows how divided the editorial board must be.

"Think about it---they endorse James two weeks ago and then not another word is written pushing his candidacy. Not even Yael's last column before the election. In the primary once they endorsed Burke and James I believe there were no less than 3 follow up editorials and columns. Four years ago the Star repeatedly editorialized about the wonders of candidate Mark Funkhouser.

And then they ponder why voters cannot make up their minds."

Another AWESOME TKC TIPSTER sees it this way . . .

"Neither candidate has managed to inspire Kansas City, we're all to the point where we could just flip a coin . . . Right now, we're really just deciding between the evil of two lessers."

That stings, but I like it.

Even more things to consider . . .

The weather looks like it will play a bigger role in this election than any endorsement or bit of high priced rhetoric . . .

There is a lot of work underway to get the Eastside vote out . . . But if they didn't come out to vote in the Primary, what makes anybody think they will now?

Finally, today's Libya bombing should convince us that the hope and change that President Obama promised is now nothing more than a cruel joke . . . Is it fair to expect more from Sly James or Mike Burke given that they're stepping into a weak Mayor form of government, an office completely tarnished by scandal and incompetence and an overall U.S. macroeconomic decline. So, now that we're repeating the same foreign policy tactics used when I was but a boy . . . It's clear that the era of American Exceptionalism is now completely at an end and this nation and this city is simply caught in a endless loop of FAIL.

And all of this indecision between remarkably similar and unexciting options has inspired tonight's playlist . . .

As always, thank you for reading this week and have a safe and fun weekend.

  1. If endorsements matter, why hasn't Burke's own wife fail to endorse his campaign for mayor or even speak to the press willingly?????? What is she holding back or why does she find politics and Mike so distasteful?????????

  2. FROM GONE MILD BLOG:
The piece was paid for by none other than Mike Burke’s own strong supporter, James Nutter. The flyer was paid for by “Citizens for Integrity, Calvin Bender, Treasurer”. There is no such organization, but Calvin Bender is treasurer of the “Committee for Integrity”, and here’s the report of who gave money this year. Nutter is, as Burke is proud to point out, a prominent Burke supporter.

Now, why would Burke’s friend send out an amateurish piece doing a botched hatchet job on Burke?

  3. FWIW - I think the explanation posed by Doc - one of my commenters - is probably more plausible than my own attempt to understand why Nutter was paying for a hit piece on Burke. I'm happy to see both camps have disavowed the negative pieces from outsiders - while I strongly prefer James, my respect for Burke remains unshaken.

It was a weird day, but both candidates showed a good deal of class.

do you mean "why HAS burke's wife failED to endorse him?"

maybe b/c after gloria's "work," both candidates said, "she's gonna stay out of my job?"

  9. We really need to thank the Kanders for stepping up and putting Sly James forward so that we might see the end of the corrupt old machine days of Jim Nutter.

I saw that guy in a restraunt recently and he cannot even get it together enough to shave anymore. He is a filthy old man. Just, disgusting.

  10. Have any of you seen Jim Nutter lately???? It's time to just start feeling sorry for him.

  11. Tony: I'll only disagree on one thing. Lots of undecided in my opinion is everybody (at least most) really like the both. I like them both. They even like them both. Either way compared to the last four years, this is a big win.

I think the piece is tracable to Scott Burnett's lobbyist business partner: Jim Bergfalk, who was Deb Hermann's campaign manager. Bergfalk used the Integrity committee in the primary. It look to me like there was some Nutter money left over, and Bergfalk and Burnett used it to savage Deb's Northland enemy.

It is in particularly dirty of Scott "Conflicts of Interest Are May Way of Life" Burnett to put out a press release crying about a mailer that he very well likely had a hand in creating.

If we had a newspaper in this town, they would print news about political corruption like this and people would buy the newspaper, and the layoffs would stop.

The Scott Burnett outcry was over a Burke TV ad, not the mailer, but the Bergfalk/Burnett angle on this is very interesting.

If you read that piece, which is a hard thing to do, it is easy to believe that it was designed for Deb before the primary but never sent.

  14. No one wants old machine politics. Stay classy James.

  15. James isn't staying classy. He's slinging dirt right along with the Kanders. The people in politics who must endure them know as much.

  18. I don't think Nutter had a clue about the Burke hit piece. Blame Jim Bergfalk and Meghan Tallman for that bit of handiwork. Tallman has controlled Committe for Integrity, which is hilarious since she has none. Her ex was the treasurer up until a few months ago. The address before they went to a PO Box was Tallman's house.

Another interesting thing of note with Tallman's committee: in 2008 she listed $8,000 in expenses on one of the committee's quarterly reports. But, she failed to list what the expenses were and to which parties they were paid, which is an enormous ethics violation. Too bad no one at the Ethics Commission ever looks at the filed reports or pays attention. They should be able to sniff out corruption like hers in a heartbeat.

The story centers on Tallman and Bergfalk.

  22. We know that The Star is a ball-less zone.

  23. If SGB Communications and Anonymous 3/20/11 5:03PM is correct it seems as though there is not only a Missouri Ethics violation but a criminal violation as well. What about that? That may be the bigger issue Tony! Who goes to jail?
