I guess some compassion is in order here given a shocking, local discovery:
“White men, particularly those between 35 and 55, have the highest suicide rates,” said Gerald Hoff of the Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department.
I didn't know that Kansas City hosts around 100 suicides every year and white men, particularly those between 35 and 55, have the highest suicide rates.
These quitters are described as young and relatively wealthy so their choice is even more perplexing.
And while I can't spend my time trying to protect the fragile psyche of privileged white dudes, I'm thinking about at least making a disclaimer in order to warn everybody that I make a habit of ACCURATELY blaming white guys with money for all of the world's suffering.
They have to kill themselves, because the black guys are too busy killing each other . . .

ReplyDeleteMoney doesn't buy happiness, Tony. I'm surprised that you are so condescending to these people who take their own lives--which is a tragedy, no matter who does it (White, Black, Hispanic, what have you).
ReplyDeleteSomehow, if a person is white and/or can live comfortably, they are necessarily supremely happy? How can you be so ignorant and reductive?
Note: I'm hispanic, and have had a best friend take his life despite the fact that he lived comfortably. I'm dumbfounded that you'd approach this issue so flippantly.

ReplyDeleteSuicide occurs for many reasons. Money, color, gender are not the reasons. Severe depression, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, loneliness, are but a few reasons for suicide. People who are successful at it have convinced themselves that others will be better off without them and will get on with their lives. It is not selfish nor the cowards way out. Sometimes it is just an ending to unbearable pain.
