A gift worth more than $1 million will be announced today by the Burns & McDonnell Foundation for Science City at Union Station.
Considering the place never really attracted a crowd the first time and Union Station is now nothing more than pricey subsidized office space, I can only hope the Science City windfall will be spent studying loneliness and bad decisions -- A discipline that's always useful to the people of Kansas City.
After all the cash Marcason sent their way they can afford it.
ReplyDeleteJust an attempt to celebrate The Burns and McDonnell CEO, Greg Graves, as the Chair of the Chamber. Don't forget that the Chamber just became a tenant in Union Station.
ReplyDeleteThese folks love to celebrate themselves and each other. It's really too bad they never even try to do much of anything for the actual residents of the city.
Last year the Chambers top three priorities were:
Development
Crime
Jobs
I guess "mission accomplshed". What are the priorities this year?
Shit, if they really cared about science and education, they could have spent that money on endowed (not talk in tits or cock) faculty positions at local high schools or jr colleges.
ReplyDeleteNope... This is all about rich folk sucking each other off.
They are part of the crowd who stuck KC with this money pit, let them pay for it. When reasonable people pointed out the lies in the "consultants" projections they were painted as naysayers. These people lied to the taxpayers, plain and simple. No more taxpayer funds should ever go to Union Station, ever.
ReplyDelete7:43 You got that right. Remember when Al Brooks ran a Mayoral campaign in 07 calling anyone who spoke about an upcoming recession "Chicken Little"? Our economy has been a real laughing matter since hasn't it Al? Barnes was also fond of the word naysayer. Beware of people calling people who try to warn the public about shaky economic development deals like the next up to bat, the hotel. These are generally clueless people who can't understand or simply don't care about economic realities and consequences. I can imagine Barnes sitting in her living room dreaming about the day peple will feel her P&L was a cash cow like she said it would be. At least she isn't lonely, her light rail friends are probably keeping her company.
ReplyDeleteScience City sucks! Took my kids once horrible.
ReplyDeleteI wish Science City would put in a Taco Bell so TKC can start being a voice of optimisim instead of needless criticism. This headline could have easily been "Rich White Guy Commits to KCMO's Inner Core".
ReplyDeleteI love how everyone says Union Station is a boondoggle.
ReplyDeleteIt was the last time Kansas and Missouri cooperated to get something accomplished in the metro area.
Sometimes government has to invest in attractions that may not be hugely profitable and may require a subsidy. It's part of having something in Kansas City that people from out of town will want to come and see.
Kansas City's attractions are dispersed. Kauffman and Arrowhead are built in no-mans-land. Westport, Crown Center, P&L and the Plaza are not within walking distance of each other.
The bottom line is that the non-cooperation and outright disdain for one another between KS and MO are hampering the overall competitiveness of the Kansas City metro area.
10:59 The entire campaign was a lie. It would have never have been successful if they had admitted a continuing subsidy would be needed. Let Burns & Mac spend their money, they were part of the liars.
ReplyDeleteThe ONLY thing Union Station is good for is a nice Segway driving location!
ReplyDeleteThere goes a million bucks down the drain.
