HOW BADLY DOES THE "CAPTAIN TACO" CONTROVERSY HURT DEB HERMANN IN THE KANSAS CITY MAYORAL PRIMARY?!?!

Seriously, I didn't think The Star had the guts to go with this story:

"Fifteen years ago, when Kansas City mayoral candidate Deb Hermann helped run a Northland community policing center, she referred to an Hispanic officer as “Captain Taco,” former officers say.

Hermann strongly denies that and other allegations"

Just like so many unsubstantiated rumors about Alvin Brooks last time around, I thought this one was gonna stay buried. I heard there was audio tape but didn't believe it.

For many Latinos leaders, this story was a big part of the reason they didn't give their endorsement to Deb.

On my part, I tend to be a bit more practical on this thing . . .

Here's my reasoning:

1. Deb just earned her "Conservative" credentials.

2. Council Lady Hermann was never going to get widespread support in the urban core or minority communities so the "direct" impact of this one might be negligible.

However . . . Thinking about this rationally . . .

THE YEARS OLD ACCUSATION OF RACIST TALK MIGHT HAVE JUST KILLED HERMANN'S CHANCES AT THE PRIMARY!!!

It all depends . . .

Again, I hear there is audiotape on this still out there and hearing Hermann say those words after her denial is going to end her candidacy . . . Even better, I don't think the other white lady who hangs around the Westside is going to take the fall for her and if it comes down to a blame game scenario . . . That's just uglier for everybody and worse for Hermann. She could pull that one off though considering they both kind of sound alike . . .

Manny Lopez of the beloved Manny's Restaurant and his support might help on this one but his political group doesn't do any canvassing or campaign work among Latinos. They are good at making interesting position statements though . . .

Still, this morning there's nothing to talk about but the impact of this revelation and Deb Hermann's chances at mayor.

Strangely, this is still about white people since minorities were never gonna vote for her to begin with . . .

The question to you d-bags: Will liberals and moderates on the South side of the river (i.e. most of Kansas City) back away from Deb Hermann and her run for Mayor because of the alleged racial remarks?

I can't really answer that question . . . But I will assume this won't really impact her votes in The Great White North and may even strengthen her rep when it comes to winning folks who are frustrated with Mayor Funky but don't like anybody else.

However, in the final analysis, my life experience in Kansas City tells me that nobody is really going to be upset or stand in defense of Latinos against alleged racism. We'll see.

  1. Deb Herman is a racist.

  2. Something she might have said fifteen years ago is being used to defeat her? Meh. I am more concerned with what she says and does now.
As I type, there's a Funkhouser ad on tv--there's the real danger.

  3. Deb is a racist and always has been. Her fight against and comments made in the effort by black church members to establish a northland place of worship were appalling. Her treatment of Wayne Cauthan was unacceptable and seemed based in part because of his race. This is not 15 years ago, it is NOW. ? In the early 90's Hermann was a GOP committee member and campaigned against Bill Clinton and Mel Carnahan. How much more do you need to know.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I was neutral on Hermann, but now I think if it is her and Flunk, he wins! What a terrible thing that would be. But recall---Deb supported his appointment of Frances Semler. She has a history on race as we are finding out and it ain't pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  5. No wonder Mike Sanders endorsed her. This endorsement will haunt "Captain Hair Club."

  6. Sorry, I don't buy it. Seriously, this supposedly happened 15 years ago and it comes out now? Dirty politics. Deb is not a racist.

  7. Deb - Sanders Connection2/16/11, 6:52 AM

If she admitted she said it and admitted she was wrong to say it I would feel better about her than when she tries to run from it.

The Sanders comment is very true.

It also makes me wonder why Sandy Mayer would work for Mike Sanders who obviously disrespects her community? Also, why did Sandy take sides against the community when Mike Sanders attacked GCI funding?

  8. If the Latino "leaders" won't vote for someone because of something like this, they're dumber than I thought.
First, you might find out where that name came from and what the officer involved thought of it.
And this "everybody's a racist crap really gets old. To have REAL relationships with people, you have to have enough understanding and appreciation for their points of veiw that there can be candid conversations which are both serious and fun.
All these oversensitive types who see prejudice under every rock would have a very hard time in a Navy fighter squadron where everyone has a call sign and a nickname.

"because of something like this, they're dumber than I thought"

  12. Why did Sanders endorse that woman? I know Tony will not tell us because he is in the tank for Deb Hermann.

Somebody who reads this must know something about that endorsement.

It would be as if Sanders endorsed Frances Semler. There must be a story here.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yea 6:56am, are you serious?
Don't you know that elected officials' jobs are simply to shovel taxpayers' money to special interest groups, not demand any results, and shut up? Or not do anything to round up the thugs terrorizing the east side or be accused of racial profilinf?
Making your ethnic identidy the most important part of yourself relieves you of any repsonsiblities and qualifiys you to get "your fair share". Look at how well that startegy has worked on the east side. Don't you want your community to be just like that? And look at the millions of dollares that poured through the KCMSD into the pockets of family members and friends.
And if you say anything about this, you're a racist. What a tired old worn out joke!

  15. Conservative Credentials = Bigotry2/16/11, 7:46 AM

Deb is always trying to show how tough she is. She should step up, admit what she did and apologize, which would show her strength.

Actually, I think she had Tony leak this story to reaffirm her "conservative credentials," and the easiest way to verify your conservatism is to say something bigoted.

Ah, I see -- it must be true.

BTW, Deb told Funk not to appoint Semler.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Disclosure: I support James.

Now, to the rest of the commenters, such as 7:46 and others, are you stupid? Why would Hermann admit to something she obviously didn't say? Ortega is a known Rowland supporter. Ortega has publicly crowed about getting La Raza to support Rowland. Now he is bringing up 15 year old accusations with no evidence of prrof. And The Star asked Hermann to prove she didn't say something?

The real question is, how much did Glorioso and Gray pay Kraske to use this race-baiting rubbish to smear a candidate? What dirt will they throw at James if he emerges from the primary? Will it be race-baiting too? Or will they back off to help their endorsed candidate? I hope so, but the way The Star lets their editorial side run their reporting side, who knows.

Hatchet job, Kraske. I thought you were better than that.

  20. 7:25 here's your answer. Deb and her handlers have been "all yes all the time". Those who know the other candidates know that they can not be assured of cooperation on their issues all of the time....the quid pro quo is not available. Big $ - special interest people are motivated by the "yes" factor and it's evident with Deb's candidacy.

She's not wealthy or very employable and needs the job. They know she'll need it even more after she goes up over $100k so that assures 8 years of "yes" if she's re-elected. It's a "Queenmaker" play where they'll be a tremendous number of control points behind the scenes. Not a scenario that applies to any of the other candidates.

  21. Scherer hated community policing -- and he hated the fact that he was relegated to supervising it. There was a community policing office in Gracemor where Deb lived.

So, Scherer butted heads with Deb == because he didn't want to be there.

    So, who's bad here?

And, I agree -- nobody first-hand heard Deb say it, no tape produced -- I don't buy it.

    Someone out there is desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think this is beneath Kraske to print this unsubstantiated rumor.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Some comments here need to be addressed because the people who wrote them are lying.
6:24- Hermann did not oppose a "place of worship" in the northland that was a black church. She, along with other council members opposed all of the federal housing dollars being given to the church to build a SENIOR LIVING FACILITY! Why? Because the Northland already has a glut of senior living, and every one of the Northland's housing dollars went to one place in Clay County. No other neighborhood agencies received a dime. Platte County received no money. No Northland council members were consulted; their housing dollars were just hijacked. Do you think for one moment if Northland council members harnessed all of the housing funding for south of the river to build something that wasn't needed, that the third district wouldn't scream bloody murder? Of course they would.

6:27, you are 100% wrong. Hermann did NOT support Semler for park board. No ifs ands or buts.

7:25, Sanders endorsed Hermann because of her qualities and credentials. Since Deb didn't support Semler's appointment, there isn't, as you claim, a story here.

Yes I am a Hermann supporter and proud of it. She does not have a racist bone in her body. I hope she wins, but if by some awful chance she does not, it should be because voters made a choice based on true information and not this disgusting mudslinging. Ortega should be ashamed of himself.
Interesting fact...Vince Ortega desperately wanted to be on the park board and was furious when he didn't get selected both before Semler and again after she quit.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well absent a tape, we'll never know if she really said it. However, she worked against the City's civil rights ordinances in two terms. Top it off with her viciousness against Cauthen and a pattern does emerge. Maybe it won't matter after all since there is still a racist element in KC that continues to hang on like athelet's foot. Don't think so? Think back to all the times you've read racist bullshit on these blogs from douche bags who do know better but continue to spew that crap. Its out there and Deb will get their votes like some Grand Dragon of the Klan.

That was a sucker punch and I'd love to know who tipped the Star... THAT's the news. THAT's the candidate y'all should vote NO. That's business as usual at Shitty Hall!

Sounds as if Tony knew about it. Since he didn't go with it, he should tell us who was trying to get someone to bite on it.

Its' a real dilemma... burn an anonymous tipster (uh asshole) to tell what's the REALLY BIG story here... or keep quiet and keep those chickenshit cards, letters, and hate emails coming in!

Would Tee be man enough to hand the story to someone else just to make sure it gets out?

  27. Hey 7:25 I don't know if you support Burke but he is very quid pro quo. When he was not-so-quietly running during the Funk recall times, he was promising potential supporters everything from park board appointments and port authority gigs to office positions and commissions. He even proposed hiring Hermann if she would stay out of the race. So don't delude yourself that the other candidates aren't playing the quid pro quo game. Burke practically invented it.

  31. Let's see . . . Ortega supports a candidate. Deb is a threat to that candidate. So, suddenly, Ortega remembers hearing a tape fifteen years ago that doesn't exist but supposedly damages Deb.

    Right.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 7:59 is right...unfortunately. It's a shame because Deb has some good qualities. The other top candidates don't fit the profile that applies to the bundling that has occurred. It'll be interesting to see where the $ goes in the general. As always, follow the $ and you'll find the insiders and the number of "control points" that are in play.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I heard a tape where Ortega said he was going to claim there was a tape where Deb made a damaging statement.

I hope the tape I heard still exists too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Radioman, I agree. Someone set Deb up and we don't have to loom far for the "tipster" AKA Brutus. Glorioso is on Rowland's payroll. Ortega helped deliver La Raza to Rowland. Ortega, who was not the best cop ever in blue, has been mad at Hermann for years about community policing. How convenient that he now brings up these slanderous comments. Deb has served on city boards and commissions. She ran and won twice for a city-wide seat. Where was the damaged Ortega during these elections and appointments? If these ludicrous charges for which no proof exists, were true, shouldnt Ortega have brought them up during Deb's first election? Or did it take a little grease from Glorioso to jog his memory? God knows when it comes to grease, Glorioso has the corner on the market.

    ReplyDelete
  35. One thing I know for sure first hand is that Deb calls people Dip=S--t and she is a my way or the highway kind of person. So two out of three makes the odds of Captain Taco good. The people that keep saying there is no evidence are ignoring the fact that Ortega heard the tape and shared his response at the time. Plus, she said they were in conflict and then said it was in "fun". When you tease someone in fun it is usually in affection, not conflict. Of all the candidates in the race, Deb will clearly be the most difficult personality to work with. For all those people out there salivating as she promises you everything you ask for, the joke is on you.

  37. To all of the folks who claim the firing of Wayne Cauthen was a racist move by Hermann, get clue and get over it. Cauthen systematically destroyed departments in City Hall. He discriminated against non-blacks and treated everyone from department heads on down like trash. He showed utter disdain for appointed persons and for residents of KC. Hell, he showed disdain for the entire city! Under Cauthen, people in high level positions stole money from the city, used city credit cards for personal gain, surfed porn sites during work hoirsnon city computers, gave out sweetheart contracts to friends, and basically tried to dismantle everything he couldn't absolutely control.

It took seven votes to get rid of Cauthen. Four came from south of the river. Does that make Jan, Beth, Cindy and Funk racist too?

Deb held Cauthen to high standards, as she does herself and those around her. Caution was an incompetent thug who mismanaged our city and left its finances in a wreck. Does holding him accountable make someone a racist?

Clinton Adams, Ken Bacchus and others in the black community wanted Cauthen out too. Are they 'Uncle Toms"?

  45. Tony, this isnsuch a lame and disgusting attempt to slander and libelnthe frontrunner. The south of the river vote is going to be carved up between Rowland, Funk, James, and some even to Wheeler, Klein and Burke. the south groups have already been bought and paid for (The Call, Freedom), or bribed (Citizens) and there is no one candidate who sticks out. Rowland knows he'll sucknfor votes North and is determined to keep any south votes from going to Hermann.

Has anybody asked themselves this: why is The Star, as well as commenters on this blog, demanding that Deb prove a negative? It is impossible to do, and even our courts don't demand it. You are innocent until proof is offered to the contrary. No proof has been offered here, just innuendo and rumor from people with something to gain. I hope the KC voters are smart enough to catch on. 56. Deb the Leader of the Exaggeration Club2/16/11, 9:36 AM

Best Post on Hermann's role to keep Ford.

Probably not Deb Hermann. The phone rang all afternoon from other campaigns and lawmakers who think her claim that she “led the effort” to save the Ford Claycomo plant is at best an exaggeration.

Remember: The incentive that “saved the plant” came from the state. And several lawmakers intimately involved said her role was not any more significant than others involved in the effort, although she did meet, did testify, did contribute.

“She was supportive,” said former state Rep. Tim Flook, a Liberty Republican.

But, he added, “She didn’t have any more involvement on it than Funkhouser did on it or any more involvement than (KC council members) Bill Skaggs or Ed Ford.”

Added former state Rep. Jason Grill, a Parkville Democrat: “I don’t think that’s an accurate statement. If anyone led the regional effort, it was (state Rep.) Jerry Nolte.”

Nolte: “She didn’t lead any organized activities…She was on the team, and she did her part as a team member.”

And see this, from Sen. Luann Ridgeway: “If anybody was leading the effort down here in Jefferson City it was Jerry Nolte, the governor, and me and the Ford people and the department of Economic Development…It is not my recollection that she led the effort, nor do I think it’s a fair characterization for her to say that she led the effort.”

Claycomo, btw, isn’t in Kansas City.

In an interview, Hermann said the claim refers to the city’s efforts for the Claycomo plant, not the entire push.

“I led the City Council. I led the city. A lot of people led,” Hermann said. “There wasn’t anyone else from the city working on it. Nobody.”

And, she added: “I didn’t say I did it.”

It could be a matter of tone: Had Hermann said “I helped lead the effort to save” the plant it might have escaped criticism. Instead, she said “I led the effort….”

And now see this: a Hermann mailer, with this quote: “We don’t need to be snowed anymore…by the exaggerated claims of those running for mayor about what they have done before….” Hmmm…..

Not the time for a distraction.

  73. Except for Deb's mishap with taking credit for Ford I think she has been straightforward. Sly has two. They are the cream of the crop.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Good god you conspiracy theorists who think Deb would actually leak this cockamamie story are unreal. The only conspiracy nut I know of that beats this bunch is Jack Cashill, the big anti-Obama birther. Oh and also an advisor and a supporter of Funk and a friend to Jeff Roe.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Deb DiD lead the city's efforts to save Ford. Not to take anything away from Jerry Nolte who worked very hard, but no one in Jeff will even take Funkhouser's calls. Deb helped make the push with state people and led the city. Nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Campaign says "Deb led the regional effort".

Fucking apologists, admit the mistake and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  77. If the point of Deb's ad was to show her leadership capabilities, she should have focused on the City budget process, not by taking credit for something where she was only a peripheral player.

If the point was to show her commitment and connection to working folks, creating jobs and economic development, surely there is something else she has done the last 8 years she could point to.

In any event, this is a slap in the face to the many folks who were really out there on the front line and who made it happen (e.g. Notle, Nixon).

    ReplyDelete
  78. Deb was the only leader from our City to stand up and be a part of the Team that saved the Ford Plant, which is what she says repeatedly. I didn't see any of the other wanna be Mayors fighting for Claycomo. Where was Funky? In the Hills? Looking at More wedding dresses? Hiding from more lawsuits?

I applaud her for stepping up and being part of the team - if people would listen to her words and read her fliers, then they would know and understand that she was the only KC LEADER to be part of the team to LEAD and save the Ford Plant and keep the jobs and people here and help our City and the City of Claycomo.

    ReplyDelete
  79. We already have enough problems with KC's relationships in Jeff City.

Wonder how Deb's slapjacking of credit for Ford, that is rightly deserved by state lawmakers, will play in Jeff City should she be elected Mayor of KC.

So did she get mayor's job? Oh. election hasnt happened yet. sigh. call me when it's over with!

  97. OK, years ago Deb was community council president of the Gracemore neighborhood. Her council sued hunt midwest mining and received $1.2 million dollars which help fund the community pool she ran, supposedly with alot of volunteers. One volunteer was paid for his time worked, but since he was on disability, they paid his wife under her name. Cant prove it, but I know it is true, cuz i heard it right from her mouth. She used to call a friend of mine who was tanned and had black hair-A BURRITO. Called her that several times, cant prove it, but I heard it! The house behind hers in Gracemor, two men who were gay lived there. She didnt want anyone to know about that they were gay and they were friends, cuz some old timers on the council would be mad or offended. Cant prove it but heard it. Also heard that the CAN officers (community action n-something or another) that she had working out of the school in Gracmor, had a whole lot of 1-900 sex calls placed from their office. Cant prove it, but heard it. She also had the officers running all over the neighborhood doing stuff for her. She had them look up private info on certain residents and then made them not tell anyone. Cant prove it, but heard it. She would tall about peoples kid's calling them names and making fun of them. She would sit up at the pool late hours of the nights with her cronies and drink beer and smoke her cigs and rant and rave about residents she didnt like in her gruff old voice. She only does what makes her look good and what she can get credit for. Not a good mayor candidate at all-will vote for the funk!

    ReplyDelete
  98. @ 10:27 - Nice try with the underhanded compliment to Sly James. Yeah, pretty clever to want Herman and James in the general. He's more prone to be the victim of race baiting than the other candidates and she's guaranteed to beat him in the Northland and thus win the election. Thanks but no thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Can't prove it -- then why believe it?

I live in Gracemor, and I know that your stuff is garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  100. You know what? I heard it and thats all that matters to me. I know what kind of person she is. She is a fake, a phoney, a racist. I know the real Deb Hermann from Hermannville.

So are you saying Deb doesn't smoke or have a gruff old voice?

    ReplyDelete
  102. These allegations do not surprise me. Deb's reputation for making racist comments is nothing new. People have been saying this for years (since she has been on the council). Word is the drunker she gets, the more disparaging her comments are. hmph, kinda like Michael Fletcher. Plus, take a look at her record. She claims to be a friend to neighborhoods but she has only started attending neighborhood meetings east of Troost since her bid for Mayor... not even an appearance at the City Budget Meetings in the predominately black districts until of late. Typical and disgraceful. Deb, just go away.

    ReplyDelete
  103. so if you live in gracemore, did you know about the hunt midwest mining lawsuit filed on behalf of the entire neighborhood? or were you one of the individuals that received under the table money for your house to get fixed up? You also must be the ones who works at the pool or maybe you are a special volunteer that gets a special volunteer appreciation dinner once a year paid for by the money from hunt midwest. did you house cave in or foundation crack? did you street cave in or backyard? do you even know about this money? say yes or no? did you know that when people buy a house in HERMANNVILLE that the realtors DO NOT HAVE TO DISCLOSE UNDERGROUND BLASTING. She made this a requisite in the lawsuit. do you even know how much money they are receiving? how much money they get for limestone blasted in wight? do you know where the sizemograph monitors are located and have you seen the readings? do you know if the blasting ever went above the allowed magnitude that it is suppose to stay under? well if you live in gracemor, you should know all those answers, so answer them for everyone to see how much she is keeping from the residents of HERMANNVILLE.

  104. Deb is a mean, lying, backstabbing, vindictive, never-wrong old cur who thinks much too highly of herself.

  107. TO ANY GRACEMOR RESIDENT (HERMANNVILLE)

    ANSWER THESE PLEASE:

Do you know about the Hunt Midwest Mining Settlement of $1.2 million dollars and also the money they receive for the pounds and inches of the limestone?

Do you know about the money being put into Piper Jaffrey stocks?

Do you know about the sizemograph monitors and where they are located in Gracemor?

Have you seen the recordings from the monitors?

Do you know how many years they are continuing to blast?

Were you informed as a homeowner that the Community Council was going to sue on your behalf and that you would not receive any money?

Do you know that realotors do not have to disclose the blasting to any home buyer?

Do you know that they pool was being funded by this money?

Was your home ever damaged due to foundation cracking?

    ReplyDelete
  108. DEB HERMANN.....PLS ANSWER THESE:

How much money did the Community Council receive from the lawsuit and where did it go?

Has any homeowner in Gracemor ever received money due to structural damage from the blasting?

Does the Council receive money for every in and pound of limestone blasted out under our homes?

Where are the missing pages of the lawsuit disclosing all the financial information that is suppose to be at the courthouse?

If King & Hershey were to be asked about their copies, would anyone be able to view the financial disclosure papers?

Was the CAN office phones ever used for 900 sex line phone calls?

Were any officers ever asked to run background checks on residents residing in Gracemor?

Was Carl’s wife’s name used for his payroll from working at the pool so that he could still collect disability? Hahaha and you know just what I mean!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hey Deb, I remember you driving up and down the streets of Gracmor with a police scanner listening to residents private phone calls on their cordless phones-back in early 2000's. What a way to keep on top of things as President of Community Council. Glad now everyone uses cell phones, or have you found a way to listen to those as well? Your character is out of whack.

She has lied to everyone in that damn neighborhood for years. i really want you to look at those questions and think about just what she didnt tell you and what has gone one right under your front porch.

My 6 your old daughter fell into the pool and hit her head on the side as she fell in the life gaurd who did a wonderful job at helping her out and making sure she was ok. I packed up our stuff and gathered the other children in our group and as we were leaving Deb Hermann started clapping and laughing and said "What ever gets you out of here early is good" All my 6 year old remmbers is Deb Hermann laughed and clapped when she got hurt. The funny thing is now my daughter is 20 and lives in Kansas city and can vote guess who she won't be voting for.

I know of many who applied to get this money to fix there house but you first have to prove that it is damaged caused by the blasting. She does use the money for what ever she wants but she and the other board members took a buy out

  136. I am a neighborhood leader and I have known Deb for years on the neighborhood council. I always suspected her reasons for wanting Cauthen gone because they started so soon after he was hired. It wasn't because he was a bad City Manager (he eventually was) it was too early to know and she was promoting getting rid of him. She was mad about some of the people he replaced as directors. I also remember getting calls from her slinging mud against her fellow City Council Members. She would say they were against neighborhoods and were not supporting her. She named one council woman that I always saw at meetings all over town and I said that she was very active in supporting neighborhoods and was always in attendence and she replied, "She voted against me on the housing issue and no one is more pro neighborhood than I am so she is against neighborhoods". I swear that's what she said. Turns out in the end Cauthen was right about that housing mess and so was the council members who voted with him and against her when she tried to defend her housing program. I thought she sounded a little crazy to say that anyone who voted against her on issues was against neighborhoods because she "was" neighborhoods. Truth is, she was her neighborhood first and foremost. She always had a sarcastic tone and a temper if you didn't agree with her. That's her.
