Today the IAM/USW union members employed by Harley-Davidson voted 2 to 1 in favor of ratifying a seven year contract that gives no commitment to keeping the factory open, severely guts healthcare benefits, freezes pay for four years, gives no increase in the pension plan or the financial performance contingent 401(k) match, caps vacation at four weeks for employees with 12+ years service, lessens the amount of paid holidays, cuts overtime pay and allows for up to 30% non-union workers to do union jobs for a wage equal to about 2/3 the current union wage with no benefits. The unions agreed to open their contract after H-D made a request to do so in late 2010.
Also included in the contract was a statement about the Affordable Care Act, or as it's usually referred to Obamacare: "The Affordable Care Act, which became law in March 2010, may impose increased costs, penalties, and/or taxes on the Company for providing health and welfare benefits to its employees and may require the Company to cover additional mandated benefits under the plans. Therefore, if the Company incurs additional costs, penalties, or taxes as a result of the Affordable Care Act, it reserves the right to pass on those additional costs , penalties and/or taxes to the employees(and/or to exercise its right to reduce benefits in a corresponding amount to offset the additional costs, penalties and taxes)."

Kansas City's Harley-Davidson workers ratified an amended contract on Monday that will eventually mean a smaller the workforce at the plant.

ReplyDeleteActually, I have a Harley and 2 Buells. All I can say is welcome to 2011. Harley is the victim of incredibly BAD management and a dealer network that failed to adapt to a changing market. I doubt they will survive, unless someone buys the thing that understands the motorcycle market.

ReplyDelete5:13 - EXACTLT!!! Just about every liberal Crat I know that whines about union rights and the minimum wage buys has a non-union and non-American made vehicle in their driveway. They hire non-union skilled laborers doing side work. They vote for politicians making their fortunes off of non-union labor. They send their children to non-union private schools. A bunch of fricking hypocrites.
