Given that a lot of experts cite the current U.S. prison system as a "stunningly comprehensive and well-disguised system of racialized social control" I'm not at all surprised to see so many locals rally behind a local young person charged with murder.
Because the reporting is so kind and I don't notice any vitriolic comments directed against the young person in question, I'm going to assume something very obvious regarding this case and how it differs from so many other instances of young people in minority communities who are summarily sent up the river for much lesser infractions.

Excellent point. EXCELLENT.
ReplyDeleteGood sense. But in fact 11 year olds, IMHO, should never be charged with murder.
ReplyDeleteYeah, T, the boy is white. Privileged? Not so much. The boys father beat him and then put the gun in the boys hand and told him, "shoot me, or I'm going to take the gun from you and shoot you"... What would you do? The boys actions do not warrant murder charges. Much like Radioman, and, regardless of race, I doubt the actions of any 11 year old child warrant murder charges.
ReplyDeleteThis made the national news. The sense that I got at the time was that local law enforcement understood that there were mitigating circumstances.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we are witnesses to divine intervention. Thank you prosecutors for looking at the entire picture, keep looking into this family's lack of protecting this child from obvious danger. The buck stops ...where?
