TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! DR. CHARLES WHEELER PLANS TO RUN FOR KANSAS CITY MAYOR ONCE AGAIN!!!
Throughout the Kansas City political scene there has been a longstanding claim that a legendary local figure would enter the upcoming race for mayor. This post verifies speculation and confirms that former Missouri State Senator and a former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri from 1971 to 1979 Dr. Charles Wheeler plans to run for Mayor according to recent interview with TKC.
THAT'S RIGHT!!! DOC WHEELER HAS HIS SIGHTS ON THE KANSAS CITY MAYOR'S RACE AND HE SEEMS TO BE TAKING A POTENTIAL RUN RATHER SERIOUSLY!!!
"Of course I can confirm the rumors, I am interested in this race," Dr. Wheeler said. "I plan on getting the signatures and taking part."
I was able to obtain an interview with Dr. Wheeler at the table which bears his name at The Westport Flea Market. Dr. Wheeler regularly holds court at his table accompanied by friends and colleagues. This part of his active schedule already makes him more accessible than most Kansas City politicos. The regular coffees that he has held for more than 40 years during his elected tenure are one of the many signatures Dr. Wheeler has left on local politics. Missouri State Senator Jolie Justus has taken a page from the legendary politico's book and her regular coffee meetings are a nod to Doc Wheeler.
"I feel better when I'm campaigning," Dr. Wheeler said. "I've always enjoyed meeting all different kinds of people and listening to the political concerns that affect their lives."
On the important issues facing Kansas City during the upcoming election, Dr. Wheeler demonstrates some surprising virtuosity for a man of 84 years. When I asked about his campaign platform the former Mayor quipped that he would first work to fight age discrimination. Later, the Dr. more seriously commented, "I want to work on facilitating a better relationship between Healthcare and local government." Considering how current Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders ran a campaign almost completely based on age-discrimination last time out nobody would blame Wheeler for taking this issue of age discrimination seriously. Similarly, with Missouri's Prop C. in play, the topic of healthcare and local government will take on increased importance no matter what the outcome of the vote.
Wheeler predicted that the current crop of Mayoral candidates would only continue to grow and in the midst of the Summer heat he reminds us of a legacy of the Pendergast era, "The people of Kansas City will have the long, cold winter months to contemplate their choice for Mayor." Savvy political watchers might want to consider that ANY support Dr. Wheeler might garner would be important in this increasingly crowded field given that his endorsement after the primary could make or break a local Mayoral contender.
In the grand scheme of things it was nice talking to a Kansas City Legend and comforting to see that he is still able to flex his influence on the local political scene after all these years.
Developing . . .
Tell Chuck to tell aggie that we want ROCKFEST TO STAY IN KANSAS CITY!
ReplyDeleteOh fuck AND SHIT!!!! This is what we were waiting for!!!??? O MY GOD.
ReplyDeleteoh Lord, wake me up from this crazy dream.... better yet, wake up the old dude.
noooo...the more people who run=the greater Flunk's chances ...
ReplyDeleteANYONE BUT FUNKHOUSER!
I don't like it
ReplyDeleteHe only makes the Second Funkhouser Term more likely.
ReplyDeleteSplit the vote in the primary. Funk ends up in the last two against a black man or a woman (-like) candidate, and Funk wins.
Charlie will endorse Funk just for the fun of it.
ReplyDeleteIf a former mayor runs, I hope it's KAY.
ReplyDeleteBRING HER BACK!
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ReplyDeleteTHat's interesting. Could Chuck like the Funk? That's why Gloria needs to never leave the primary.
ReplyDeleteFunk wins!
ReplyDeleteTony, the old guy was fun-ing you. He has no hope of making an actual run for mayor. Like a lot of ex-politicos, he hates the fact that his phone rarely rings anymore. He just doesn't like it that he is not politically relevant. He may be angling for the limelight should the primary be a nail biter.
ReplyDeleteWe should honour his service and stop by his table out of respect.
He was a board member of MAST when Louie Wright's Local 42 did a power grab. Unlike the worthless city council (except Ed Ford), Dr. Wheeler was not politically bound to Louie- Louie in this issue. Dr. Wheeler knew the move into KCFD was a huge mistake, but the gentleman just didn't have the fight in him for a serious health issue.
funk won the booby prize of life... a rotten, shameful life.
ReplyDeleteFunky plays chess at the same place. He has a table. It has his mark in an unobtrusive, less gaudy place. He stuck a piece of gum under table #5.
ReplyDeletePlease retire already!
ReplyDeleteWe need more choices. Let's sell lottery tickets for the mayor's office and the money can go towards paying off the P&L district or the new 1,000 room hotel.
ReplyDeleteCharlie Wheeler can't stay awake long enough to run for mayor, and hasn't been able to for years. He was embarrassed in his last race, and he'll be embarrassed again if he has the foolishness to try to run. He has no political influence and that's the problem.
ReplyDeleteCharlie, you got an airport named after you (even if no one calls it the Wheeler airport)... so buddy, quit while you're ahead.
Word is he needed to call 911 but could not make the call because he could not find the 11 on the phone.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be a hoot if Doc Wheeler was just pulling the Mexican's leg?
ReplyDeleteI am really fed up with old white men who will not give up the ghost.
ReplyDeleteGo Away.
I support candidates like Chyanne Lockhart Cardarella who offers a new but experienced look at government.
Those pesky old white men. Tell Walt Bodine to give up the ghost!
ReplyDeletewhat hapened to the winner Chris Werner
ReplyDeleteAfter reading so much about the race on here, I heard about a forum in the Northeast area and went to it so I could meet the candidates. I was surprised at how Will Royster completely dominated the forum. He was easily the most knowledgable and experienced person speaking. I layed out in detail his experience and his ideas. To my surprise John Rizzo couldn't. I was told Rizzo was experienced but after watching the forum it was clear that he isn't. He couldn't name one thing on his resumé that makes him a qualified candidate and said he was unemployed and focusing full-time on the race. I was shocked.
ReplyDeleteFrom dead beat to dead man walking. No thanks.
ReplyDeletelolzo. You bitches are mean.
ReplyDeleteCampaign motto - I promise to live to the end of my term.
ReplyDelete"Campaign motto - I promise to live to the end of my term."
ReplyDeleteI propose an amendment:
Campaign motto - I promise to live to the end of my term, unless and until I create an embarrassing situation.
How did he manage to sneak out of the nursing home? Crazy old fuck.
ReplyDeleteWheel-o like Arban-o...time to PLEEEZE retir-o.
ReplyDeleteDoes he always dress like an extra in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"?
ReplyDeleteNO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This old man has more support than I do in the black community and he takes away my midtown base.
ReplyDeleteI HATE YOU JONAS HUGHES!!!!!
I'm getting a glass of wine and moving to overland park.
