Later on this morning in front of The Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee Meeting the KCPD is going to make a presentation regarding The ShotSpotter i.e. urban surveillance.
What's disturbing about this to me is that poor, minorities are being asked to give up their privacy first in return for a pie-in-the-sky promise that this will reduce violence. All over the globe, especially in London, there is statistical proof that increased surveillance on the public DOES NOT HELP TO REDUCE CRIME!!!
What's even worse is that I know for a fact that Congressman Cleaver's camp thinks that using mics to monitor streets in the urban core will help stop violence. It won't. Time and time again TKC has noted that authorities would be much better served by forging real relationships with communities rather wasting money on gadgets. Today, money from Congressman Cleaver's Green Zone is going to be put toward propagating the myth that technology can trump basic human interaction in a stunning betrayal of so much grassroots work done by the former Mayor of Kansas City.
Look for members of the Liberty Restoration Project sticking up for the rights of Kansas City's urban core while I hide in my basement while wearing a tin-foil hat.
I'm at a loss to see how this is a "privacy" issue Tony. I'm starting to think you really are as stupid as the commenters make you out to be.
ReplyDeleteInstead of cameras and microphones how about taking a few cops off revenue patrol, take a few from PR duty, maybe take a few report writers and actually get out on the damn street - in person.
ReplyDeleteYou realize you are referencing a story about city with 8 million+ people in you PROOF that this won't do anything.
ReplyDeleteMaybe combined with other things this will help reduce and solve crimes in the area.
Glass half empty huh?
They want freebies? They can pay the price in loss of privacy. This is why we were not the least bit interested in KCPL's kind offer to us to put our home's thermostat in their hands.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that evil power company. Spying on your energy usage.
ReplyDeleteOh wait, they send you a bill and already know your usage.
Well that's beside the point. The evil power company. Never mind that this argument about you and your thermostat has NOTHING to do with the article. It's the big bad gubment, and the power company. And your AC and your thermostat.
As I said in the other thread
ReplyDeleteI heard some Hispanic gangbangers grabbed a white woman's purse during the riots....
But most of the riot was because of the pavement apes. We need to fence off an area of downtown KCK and ship all the pavement apes from the metro area there. I'm fed up with this.
Well, hello girls.
