Obama is unstoppable.
So far his charisma has helped to nationalize the banks and maybe the real estate market as well.
He is the President who will be blamed for turning the American Auto Industry into nothing more than a collection of "welfare-mobiles"
And he openly mocked the Special Olympics on late night.
On at least one front, people from KC are ready to challenge the attitude casually put for by Obama:
Special Olympians across the country are taking the lead to get people to stop using the word "retard.''It's a nice effort and represents even more Hope for Change . . . I'm just not sure the campaign will meet with success when most of the nation was willing to overlook the President's jab at people with special needs.
The effort is called, "Spread the Word to End The Word,'' and began at a program at the 2009 Special Olympics World Games.
William Chrisman High School in Independence, Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park are among the schools were students will take part in the program.
Also . . . If people really stopped using this word . . . That would erase roughly half of the comments on this blog.
Well, better to have a president in office talking about retards than a president who actually was one.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell else are we supposed to call them?
ReplyDeletewho de nigger rollin de pukin????
ReplyDeleteAs the father of a special needs child, I can testify to the hurt words like this can cause to not only the children but their families. I've written on my blog several times that people think my son is somehow less of a person just because he has autism.
ReplyDeleteThe number of people who casually dismissed Obama's statement greatly disturbed me. Would these same people have casually brushed it off if someone asked him how Michelle was doing and he pulled his eyes down at the corners and said "she loves me long time"? Yeah, a few would but most would be appalled at such a racist statement...and using Special Olympians as a punch line is no different than that. If we wouldn't tolerate racist jokes from our President then the one he made about Special Olympics should be just as offensive.
Tony, thanks for posting about this today. Any chance to get the word out about this is appreciated.
It is rare that TKC has an intelligent comment. It is also welcomed. You are right Jason. We have to stop using this kind of hurtful language and discourage it at every turn.
