It was disappointing, but not surprising, to see a bit of disgusting ethnic profiling in The Kansas City Star on Sunday.
The following passage, in an otherwise informative article, is typical of the kind of ignorance regularly put on display by Kansas City's "paper of record."
Capt. Scott Richardson of the Mid-Missouri Internet Crimes Task Force could see the man’s face, tell he was Hispanic.Interesting . . .
IN THIS PASSAGE, THE STAR SEEMINGLY INDICATES THAT ALL HISPANIC MEN LOOK ALIKE!!!
This intolerant, bigoted and ignorant statement wouldn't be permitted against any other ethnic group and I contend, since the author is not offering a direct quote, it's a gross mis-characterization on the part of the "reporter" and not the police officer she was interviewing.
To wit, the photo featured above captures the image of a "Hispanic" male who is as just as dorky looking, blonde and lame as any other dude who would be stereotypically regarded as white. Ryan Cabrera was born in Texas to a Hispanic father of Colombian origin. I think he also banged one of the Simpson chicks . . . So, good for him.
Still . . . Despite the bigoted, cowtown misconceptions of Star writer Laura Bauer - A broad who shouldn't have made it past the recent round of layoffs . . . TKC has to, yet again, make something clear.
HISPANICS/LATINOS ARE NOT A RACE . . . THEY ARE (sort of) AN ETHNIC GROUP.
Sometimes Latinos have brown skin . . .
And other times Latinos are have pale complexions . . .
There are also Latinos who are Black . . .
Along with Latinos who share Asian heritage and features . . .
But the characterization on The Star's front page implying that "all Latinos look alike" is unacceptable . . . And once again points out that the "paper of record" going out of business does not really represent that great of a loss to minority communities in Kansas City which have been repeatedly depicted in a negative, stereotypical light by this so-called local institution.
maybe he should have not said hispanic and instead said "mexican" would that have been less bigoted but more accurate?
ReplyDeleteif this had happened in Mexico, and the roles were reversed, what would the paper there have reported. Would it be that the cop could tell he was "anglo" "white" "american"? what?
ReplyDeleteSounds like someone needs to report this to Derek Donovan, the Star's Reader Representative. The Star would be well served to check in with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists: http://www.nahj.org/home/home.shtml
ReplyDeleteI just went on that site and can not find the specific page that informs one how to deal with this sensitive issue. Please find it for me and put the link on this thread.
ReplyDeleteThanks
The first comment is from a dumbass.
ReplyDelete"Mexican" is a nationality and not a description of a subject.
There are also White, Black, Asian and Brown skin Mexicans.
Fucking idiot.
If I understand the way law enforcement works, when looking for a needle in a haystack, the procedure is to use the process of elimination.
ReplyDeleteGender, skin grouping, physical stature are first level indicators and serve to eliminate large groups of unknown suspects.
I know you have a Cause, Tony, but not everyone's out to get you. You need to chill out.
can't we all just get along?
ReplyDeleteThe article in question was on trying to catch pedophiles. You defending them now too Tony, or just the "Hispanic" looking ones?
ReplyDeleteAsshat
Not all pedophiles are "Hispanic" as this article would have people believe.
ReplyDeleteRacist.
Actually, dickhead, all pedophiles ARE Hispanic.
ReplyDeleteSee? Retarded statements make you look like a retard. So, no, the article would not have you believe that all pedophiles are Hispanic.
The fact that someone has Hispanic features, contrary to Blowtello's initial post, does NOT mean that all Hispanic males "look alike" any more than Caucasian features make Tom Cruise and Carrot Top "look alike."
I gotta stop reading this board or the stupid is going to start rubbing off on me.
false argument...in that case it was good the gringo could tell it was a Hispanic person.
ReplyDeleteWhen your traveling 70 mph down the hwy and the Hwy Patrol is traveling the other direction. Turn around..pulls u over cuz ur seat belt isn't on that's profling.
Regardless of how the reporter wrote it they had to have gotten the description of what was in the cop's head from the cop. And yes law enforcement will use Hispanic as part of the description. What are they supposed to say a white male with dark hair and dark eyes and brown complexion? When you say appears to be Hispanic, people know what that means. Sorry but we operate off of the eyeball test in this society. That is why people like Tiger Woods and Barak Obama are considered black. That is what they look like.
ReplyDelete"The fact that someone has Hispanic features"
ReplyDeleteYou're a fucking idiot.
What his a "hispanic feature"
shitehead try and defend your racism all you like, it still makes you racist.
Which are the ones that are bankrupting our hospitals by using the ER for their 8 kids' sniffles?
ReplyDeleteThe first 10:01 is smarter than the second 10:01.
ReplyDeleteGood comment.
While all hispanics may not look alike, they do ALL steal, leave trash on their front yard, and generally bring down the property value
ReplyDeletehahaha...white be STOOOOPID!!! they bring the nigger and steal from the mexicans...now it's their problem deal with it cracker faggots!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen the European immigrants came to America. They changed their names, adopted our culture and tried to be a part of the country. Today's immigrants just try to recreate their own country in America. That dooms the melting pot. History has proven that no multicultural society can ever last. We should halt ALL immigration, kick out ALL illegals, close the borders and end this stupid madness.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad to watch the scum drag down such a great country.
Get a grip Tony! All this ethnic cry baby stuff just demeans your blog
ReplyDeleteda's ok pinche...next time you order the taco plate i put the special sauce on it for you. jus like i geeve it to you puta girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteThe comments and this blog just confirm for me how racist and sexist KC has become over the years.
ReplyDeleteHAS become? sorry, hon - it's ALWAYS been that way (to those of us who came from sander climes).
ReplyDeleteHe should have said it looked like an American from Mexico - or Mexican-American - unless, of course (an most likely), a wet-back.
ReplyDeleteWhat about if we call them "pinatas"? That's more inclusive.
ReplyDeleteha
ReplyDeletebeend over i give you the chorizo up your "pinata".
