KANSAS CITY POLITICAL STREET FIGHT!!! CONGRESSMAN CLEAVER WARNS AGAINST NEGATIVE NEWS COVERAGE AMID PASEO BLVD MLK NAME CHANGE PETITION DRIVE!!!

The struggle to rename Kansas City landmarks continues.

Here's the must-see report from KMBC's Mike Mahoney:

KMBC: Renaming The Paseo for MLK could get complicated

Accordingly . . .

A behind the scenes perspective on the local discourse and how it really works:

BEHIND THE SCENES: SO FAR NOBODY IS WILLING TO GO ON CAMERA AND ARGUE AGAINST THE KCMO MLK BLVD PUBLICLY!!!

TKC political reality check: So far only online trolls attack the name change but have heretofore lacked the bravery to speak up in public away from their keyboards. It's a culture war reality check, there is no opposition against this move if critics are too scared to present their arguments in public or in something beyond a mean comment anonymous note.

The latest highlights . . .

- A recent report confirms that the Parks Board rejected the effort to rename The Paseo.

- The local ministers are launching a petition drive to get the 1,700 names they need to make the change. Rev. Sam Mann says he can get enough signatures in two prayer meetings.

- “We’re going to end up on the national news, arguing over a Martin Luther King Boulevard,” Congressman Cleaver said.

- Sacrificing a smaller street named for the controversial J.C. Nichols near the Plaza is now offered as the alternative.

  1. You lose your business and livelihood if you are politically incorrect in public.

Go ahead and change the name, all it would do is drive away investment and residents.

A great way to shoot an entire community in the foot.

  2. I'm not a resident of Kansas City...once was...you residents have lost any control over your politicians that you once may have had...I really pitty you...

  3. Poor old irrelevant Sam Mann.
With 87%+ of the 150 homicides in KCMO last year involving black victims, more than 88% of the perpetrators black, and not even half the murders ever solved year after year, renaming a street is at the top of the local SCLC agenda.
Any serious effort to help review and update police procedures and policies to help ensure they're more racially neutral?
    Way too much work.
Any chance of the SCLC taking a really good look at the local public defenders and court systems to work toward decreasing disparate treatment and outcomes for minorities?
    You have to be kidding.
Same tired old superficial crap year after year.
    MLK would be disgusted.

  4. “We’re going to end up on the national news, arguing over a Martin Luther King Boulevard,” Congressman Cleaver said.“

We aren’t, you are, nobody wants this but you.

    Exactly who does this benefit?

  5. How about we rename Emmanuel Cleaver II Boulevard?

    ReplyDelete
  6. What is the point of renaming it? To reduce property values even more, ensure white people never drive The Paseo ever again? White people avoid MLK-named streets in other cities.

  7. 7:40 is right, walk the walk tax dodger cleaver, let them re-name your street and let’s see how you’ll feel

  8. Again, the mayor and many city councilcritters are so dependent on the black vote to stay in office/have hopes for higher office that there will be only token opposition to this name change. It will take politicians with [sand] to keep it from happening. We don't have any.

  9. I Meant 7:41

  10. There are bigger problems then renaming the PASEO. CLEAVER SHOULD HELP SOLVE THE PROBLEM. OF GANG MEMBERS SHOOTING EACH OUTHER. THE DRUGS COMING FROM MEXICO AND SOUTH AMERICA FOR THE GANGS TO SELL. CLOSE THE BORDER. IF YOU DON'T USE A BORDER CROSSING. PUT THEM IN PRISON FOR TWO YEARS AND THEN DEPORT,THEM. .

  11. Paseo is paseo because of the model boulevard walk and rest areas in spain. Martin luther king has nothing to do with Paseo. Martin luther king is an icon of a failed idea. Reallymoveon dot org

  12. I agree there are bigger problems that Cleaver needs to focus on.

Nothing against MLK but just because other cities have a street named after him doesn't mean we have to, and I agree most or all MLK streets are in rough black areas. So it seems like Cleaver unknowingly is putting a stumbling block in front of Sly James, who says he's trying to build the city up. The city is turning into a mess with these two!

    1. Ah, wrong! The two turning the city into a mess are sLie James and Troy Schulte. The latter alledges to be a city manager, but everything he does is naive, corrupt and makes us look more like a cow town.

He did not vett the hotel developers and then dreamt up a strategy that gave, repeat GAVE them $50 million of tax payer money.

  13. Wonder where KC will be on the top 10 list of most dangerous MLK Boulevards

  14. You know what Chris Rock says!

"You know what's sad? Martin Luther King stood for non violence. And I don't care where you are in America, if you're on Martin Luther King Boulevard, there's some violence going down." ...

Killa shitty doesn’t need any more help creating more violence

  15. We need to start a petition to rename cleaver blvd

  16. While we’re at it, let’s name a street in Westport after Liberace!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Let's rename it: 25,000,000th Street.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There is no reason not to give them what they want, so that we can move on to real issues.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rename State Line for MLK, but beware of what the cost is--it will not be free, and residents/businesses will object. It ain't easy to chaneg a street name. Make it an "Honorary" street. All MLK boulevards in USA simply delineate black from non-black neighborhoods. Use the name, but not on Paseo.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The congressman is absolutely correct. This isn't an issue that should be the subject of malicious debate. If you listen closely to him, he says that the Parks department should take care of this, not a public petition.

There should be a street in Kansas City dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. if that's what the residents want. The Parks board has failed to engage and respond to the community. There should be a compromise here instead of a show down. This mentality is part of the problems.

I also agree with some of the statements here, there are more important problems in KCMo right now but addressing the needs of a large number of voters should be the first on the list!

  21. I agree with 741. If it's important to Emanuel Cleaver II then offer to change the name to Bursh Creek Blvd....Oh yeah that is the old name.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am sick of this awful trend of naming streets and bridges after people. I live next to I-70 and every time I start the car, I have to stare at a display showing George Brett highway. What the h@ll did that jerk every do for the City. The Paseo Bridge is called the Bond Bridge. I guess it was named after an alcoholic politician.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Let's start selling the names rights to bridges and roads. If folks want to rename Paseo Boulevard, let them buy the naming rights. The Paseo Bridge could become the Cerner Bridge. Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd could become Garmin Blvd, & etc

    ReplyDelete
  24. Remember the cleaver disaster, The Green Zone. He nuts

    ReplyDelete
  25. MLK Blvd. may as well be Getto Road, same marketing value.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I move that we rename Emmanuel Cleaver "Aunt Esther" since both seem to take the same insightful, reasoned approach to matters of great non-importance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. "There are bigger problems that Cleaver needs to focus on."
    Well said.
The only problem is Cleaver does not have the clout or will to resolve them. They require too much effort and will not get him the publicity.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rename Emanuel Cleaver Blvd To MLK Blvd.

Problem solved...a great man is honored and a crook who makes tax payers pay for his car wash is diminished.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dumb dumb dumb, Clever has nothing better to do ? Name Buckwheat Blvd. just as meaningful. Why condemn the whole Paseo corridor to an urban waste land. Developers may consider it as Paseo, but MLK Chip On The Shoulder Drive, no way.

  30. Blacks demanding crap is starting to get as old as the demanding gay community.
