A question of nomenclature for our blog community tonight . . .
The name was announced today . . .
A long-time zoo donor stepped forward to name the new female giraffe calf Dixie.
Dixie was born on Friday, February 2. Right after birth she weighed 105 pounds and stood around 5 feet tall!
Dixie will remain behind the scenes with Lizzie until conditions warm up enough for her to visit the outdoor exhibit.
And so . . .
The "Dixie" name probably isn't referring to cheap plastic party cups given that Dixie is a historical nickname for the Southern United States, especially those states that composed the Confederate States of America.
However . . .
Given the aesthetic challenges of the cutsie baby giraffe . . . The "dixie" moniker might be a bit of irony on holdout fans of Southern "tradition" or at least a reference to it's ugly legacy of white Supremacy.
You decide . . .
She kinda looks like the fans of "the South will rise again" rhetoric.
ReplyDeleteThey should name it "Methy" that might get us more of those Easter Jack visitors!
DeleteDixie is a stupid name. Try again. In the middle of a Black neighborhood they come up with this nonsense. Very stupid and very insensitive. The zoo has always been tone deaf, that's why they're building that wasteful aquarium with taxpayer money.
DeleteSome people are stupid. It's a cute girl name. Of course people like you who think black people are owed something would start this racist bull. It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm so sick of hearing the race shit. There is no black or white anymore. Everyone out there has both races in their family trees somewhere. That's guaranteed. It's an excuse for more pity to be given to the stupid people who are looking for attention. Do people complain that blacks are allowed to have a bet channel, or all black colleges. If white people asked for those things it's racist. It's a joke. There are no slaves or slave owners alive today. Period. Plus blacks were not nearly as mistreated as the native Americans. Do you see the native Americans constantly complaining. No. Get over it.
DeleteJust another lovable scamp on the taxpayer dole. Call it whatever you want, it's another drop in the bucket for your e-tax.
ReplyDeleteShould've named it snowflake for all the people who would complain.
DeleteReally? You guys are just looking for something to be offended about. It’s a female name - and a cute one at that. Pull the proverbial stick out of your asses snowflakes!
ReplyDelete^^^ +1
ReplyDeleteI hope we aren't going to have to change the name. The giraffe is a great attraction for the zoo and we need to do the best to promote our city not tear it down.
Wrong again racists!
ReplyDeleteYou CANNOT have a name that is dedicated to the Confederacy in the urban core of Kansas City. Shame on the Zoo for doing this, shame on the media for not calling more attention to it.
Change the name, do the right thing!
A name that is dedicated to the Confederacy? You are an idiot.
DeleteGive us a fucking break...! Next you’ll the African Section renamed. We have more issues to worry about instead of tagging on a zoo giraffe name.
Delete^^^ Clam down there sparky, the giraffe doesn't know what it's damn name is and never will. A tempest in a teapot to be sure.
ReplyDeleteName it Casey.
ReplyDeleteWhat would the zoo name a baboon? My suggestion got me deleted the first time so I won’t repeat it.
ReplyDeleteDoes it rhyme with Lie ?
DeleteMISS ALLEN AND ANGELA K
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you look up the so called artist that just painted the Obama's portrait and read about the painting he did of a black women holding a severed white women's head. And you people are bitching over a name given to an animal as racist?
You people are pathetic!
Probably sold for 6 figures!
DeleteGeoffrey Davis?
ReplyDeleteWould the snowflakes be happier if the giraffe were named LaQuisha or Diamondnique?
ReplyDeleteI think anybody who complains about such idiocy deserves a lesson in some real issues facing this nation.
ReplyDeleteBuckwheat would be good. It matches that hairstyle and the bugged eyes. Yeah, that's supposed to be a male name. Tell the little kiddies on a plaque that the junior giraffe is trans. Killa City likes making it onto lists, so why not be the one known for the FIRST GENDER BENDER BABY GIRAFFE?! No, not joking.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with you above mentioned poster , Stymie , Farina , Dick See , Dique Sea , DYKE Say , Dique a few seee are other options !¡!!¡
ReplyDeleteDixie is a perfect name!
ReplyDeleteTo the new baby's health!
Isn't "Dixie" just a nickname?
ReplyDeleteIsn't is short for Daisheekarasheedalumumbammbasamyassbiggabitcheeda?
How about "crackwhore" or "babymama" ?
ReplyDeleteRobert E. Lee
ReplyDeleteStonewall Jackson
J.E.B. Stuart

Land of Dixie
Dixie (the song)
All of the above names are linked to people who served in leading roles of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. So according to some people here anyone or anything that shares any part of the above names should be called upon to change them right now. If Dixie is racist then all of them are.
Whats next protests against Johnson and Johnson for using the work cotton in their products? Attacks against anyplace selling Southern Fried Chicken? Will we have to change the name of watermelon since it's deemed by some to be a racist fruit?
The insanity of labeling everything and anything as racist to gather some attention time has to stop. It serves no purpose and continues to divide people but as a rule is created by those who apparently don't want the things they claim they do.
^^^Jesus, shut up you yard ape.
ReplyDelete^^^ You might want to try that yourself.
ReplyDeleteSuper Dave the voice of common sense!
ReplyDeleteDave is usually one of the very few people who consistently makes sense on this blog. His comment is absolutely correct, there is no reason to be offended by the name, it is common, just as he proved.
ReplyDeleteYou go ahead and call her what ever you want, I'm calling her Snowflake
ReplyDeleteWould "Latrina" make everyone happier ?
ReplyDeleteLooks like a cross between Buckwheat and Yoda. Could have named it Yuckwheat. of course someone would say that is racist too.
ReplyDelete^^^ Excellent point!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful no matter what name!
