SHOCK!!! RETAIL BORDER WAR TURNABOUT: NORDSTROM DITCHES OAK PARK MALL FOR KANSAS CITY COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA!!! IS THIS JOHNSON COUNTY SHOPPNG CENTER FAVORITE SOON TO CLOSE???
An EPIC shift in middle-class luxury shopping occurred today and shakes the confidence of suburban denizens whilst boosting the fortunes of Kansas City's top shopping destination.
The announcement:
Nordstrom Announces Relocation Of Oak Park Mall Store To Country Club Plaza
Deets:
Nordstrom, Inc. today announced plans to relocate its Oak Park Mall store in Overland Park, Kansas, to Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. The new, approximately 116,000-square-foot store is expected to open in 2021. Nordstrom will continue serving customers at its current location in Oak Park Mall until it relocates.
"We've been fortunate to be able to serve our customers in this market at Oak Park Mall for the past 20 years and look forward to offering them a new shopping experience at Country Club Plaza," said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom. "Kansas City continues to be a terrific market for us. We want to grow our business here, which means we need to invest in bringing our customers the best we have to offer when it comes to both our digital capabilities and our physical locations. By building a new store, we're excited to provide a new experience that makes shopping with us even more convenient."
This one contradicts conventional thinking for a lot of reasons but mostly this . . .
Local haters can't claim that "hoodrats" killed Oak Park Mall because the move puts this retailer right in the heart of the ongoing violent teen crime crisis that has impacted KCMO's premier entertainment district for nearly a decade.
Even more dire for residents of the vast cultural wasteland that is Johnson County - This signals an ongoing move toward urban upscale as the "inner-suburbs" copes with more crime, failing infrastructure and fewer resources.
Worst of all: Oak Park Mall isn't looking for a new anchor tenant.
And so, our blog community wonders . . .
IS THIS THE DEATH RATTLE FOR OAK PARK MALL NOW THAT THEIR FANCIEST RETAILER ABANDONS THE SHOPPING CENTER???
You decide . . .
Outstanding.
ReplyDeleteThe only sad thing here is all of the real estate in and around Overland Park that's going to go up for sale at a deep discount this Spring and Summer.
I don't expect that their luck will be much better on the plaza. If anything this is a bad move for them.
Deletethat sucks. Their coffee shop is actually one of the best in Kansas City. At least they'll be closer to work now.
DeleteDamn.
Abandon Oak Park
ReplyDeleteTen bucks says this move will never happen.
ReplyDeleteOh, it'll happen. But it won't do them any good. Have you been to Nordtrom??? There's only like three people shopping there at a time and two of them are old ladies who are just browsing. Eventually the whole operation is going to come upon a crisis. And their side business like the coffee shop, cafe and personal shoppers won't do as well on the Plaza where those services are much more entrenched.
DeleteThey want the tourist DOLLARS.
ReplyDelete^^^ I'm with @ 5:34.
ReplyDeleteIf they can't make it in Paradise, they sure as hell can't make at the Boontown Mall.
This is just a ploy to get their rent lowered at Oak Park.
Can't wait for the summer of 2021 when the flash mobs hit the plaza.
ReplyDeleteYup, 25 million tourists dollars!
ReplyDelete^^^ LOL!
ReplyDeleteDon’t worry, the coloreds will run them off after they break and steal everything
ReplyDelete^^^ But the whites didn't help them and the mall is very diverse. Sorry old man 5:46. Looks like your shitty suburb is going the way of the dodo.
ReplyDeleteJUst like the Harley story people mot of the time think the closing is today. Harley is closing in 18-22 months. Nordstrom is moving in 36 months. When it actually happens then people will be in shock because they forgot about this hype story.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be sooner than that. Nordstrom is already closing about an hour earlier than everything else in the mall. They obviously want out.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe for a minute that Nordstrom will abandon their customer base. If anything, they will probably move further south and west to avoid the influx of undesirables polluting their hallowed ground.
ReplyDeleteStick a fork in the mall. It's done.
ReplyDelete"violent teen crime crisis"
ReplyDeletehuh? The one you made up? That crisis?
Hey asshole @6:15 - Go ask these people who were beaten if Tony just made it up.
DeleteGroup of teens swarm theology students in violent attempted robbery outside Winstead’s near Plaza
You can stick your head in the sand when it comes to Kansas City crime but the rest of us are realistic about it's impact.
Sorry you failed as a report but social media and yes even blogs are taking the place of the politically correct news. I can only thank the local fox station for at least being honest most of the time.
I think the mall should look for a new tenant. There is a lot of good stuff happening at Oak Park and I think security does a great job of keeping people safe. It would be a shame if the whole mall went south.
ReplyDeleteI don't begrudge Nortstrom's their decision but there isn't any doubt that the retail market in Johnson County is much bigger.
Are you nuts?
DeleteI live in JoCo but there are just way more tourists coming to the Plaza. And the streetcar is on the way. This is definitely the right move.
Brick and mortar is dying.
ReplyDeleteYou heard it here first.
^^^ +100
ReplyDeleteIt is racist and politically incorrect to try to prevent flash mobs at the plaza.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Winsteads has two off duty cops running the door says it all.
ReplyDeleteI hope Nordstrom’s has good loss prevention people and that they are armed.
ReplyDeleteOak Park has been on the way out for years. The neighborhood has gone section 8 and Prairie Fire is much cleaner, easier and SAFER. In the 70's/80's Oak Park Mall was one of the best in the country. Not anymore. We all know why.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Plaza was done? I thought nobody goes to the Plaza? I thought the Plaza was unsafe? You pants-shitting goons have absolutely no idea what the fuck you are talking about. You people are the dumbest mofo’s I’ve ever seen
ReplyDeleteShhh. Nurse will be by with the meds shortly. Please don't skip doses anymore, your obsessions trouble the other patients.:)
DeleteBig win for Kansas City today! We're making a comeback! Next year 30 million tourists? Maybe?
ReplyDeletePeople still use malls? Lol!
ReplyDeleteI use malls all the time. No better place to pick up a hot young slut and fuck her hard.
Delete^^^ Another good reason to avoid the mall. Why wait for this lose to oogle your daughter.
ReplyDeleteSecurity might be good but the mall is full of creeps like this one.
Entertainment or none retail to replace it. Theirs a lot of Retail not in OP or KC yet that can replace it.
ReplyDeletenordstrum's and the plaza could really help each other out. sounds like a great idea.
ReplyDeleteGo to Oak Park on a Saturday night and you'll see its slow march to becoming Bannister Mall. There are a lot of carjacking the mall and city keep out of the news. The apartments to the west and duplexes to the northeast are ghetto. Diversity is going to kill the mall. Diversity shoots people. Diversity carjacks people. Diversity doesn't have disposable income to spend at the mall. Diversity walks around in packs and fucks with the people that do have disposable income and drives them away.
ReplyDeleteTake your word on it. Diversity has destroyed America. As a Geezer... I worked at the mall in my teens, lived in the apartments nearby after I left the Army and have watched it turn into the shithole that the area is now. Be honest, we all know the truth. Nobody really shops there that doesn't have to. Rapes, robberies,carjacking... Snatch and graps.
ReplyDeleteThis was a smart move for Nordstrom. They will get more business and a higher profile. The mall is going down hill. A big win for Kansas City today.
ReplyDeleteSo Nordstrom (if) replacing Halls is a win? No fucking way.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who has shopped at a Nordstrom in another city will tell you that the one in the KC metro is second rate whether it’s located in Oak Park or on the Plaza. Sadly, brick and mortar retailers are dying a little more each day, and in another three years, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nordstrom leaves KC completely just like Saks did.
ReplyDeleteInternet shopping is just so much easier, I wonder why anybody bothers to go to the mall anymore. It's not just the silly fear over minorities. I'm usually more disturbed by the really horrible customer service and rude people who inhabit the mall. The sense of entitlement is palpable.
ReplyDelete^^^^You get shitty service because you’re a shitty person. Deal with that!
ReplyDeleteSection 8 turds keep the city in flux, no nice area stays that way.
ReplyDeleteHey, 9:53--how about this alternative on the Plaza--INSTEAD of replacing Hall's--
ReplyDeleteThe release claims Nordstrom's will build 126,000 square feet.
That's huge. So they want to be as far away from the movie theatres as possible--OR--think outside the box:
TEAR DOWN THE MOVIE THEATRES ENTIRELY AND BUILD NORDSTROM'S THERE!!!
Eliminate the entertainment tenant that draws the marauding gangs of urban yutes...
AMC and KCPD have tried enforcing the curfew--it's a big expensive mess that just sends a message to old white folk--this place ain't real safe.
Cops sit in the hallways and lounges by concession stands and the ticket entrance points, and the back door to parking lot, and the bathrooms. They must ID young people, who cannot be at the AMC on the Plaza after 6pm now, unless accompanied by someone over 21. The Designated Chaperone--could be for a whole busload of bored and broke kids.
So, stop trying to entertain idle youth on the Plaza, period. If you build it--a Nordstroms--"they" older whiter richer women will come, instead.
correction, typo, sorry:
ReplyDelete116,000 square feet.
