KCAVP, OurThentic and Project I Am call for action in response to the murder of Dionte Greene, a young Black gay man, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kansas City Anti-Violence Project (KCAVP) mourns the death of Dionte Greene, a 22 year old Black gay man, who was murdered last week. Dionte’s body was found in his car with the engine running early on the morning of October 31st, near 69th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

While details of the murder are still under investigation, many active leaders in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community who closely knew Dionte believe that this was a hate motivated incident based upon his sexuality and gender expression. Dionte was recognized as a leader in the Black LGBTQ community and a strong activist for other young men of color. The LGBTQ community is calling for action and a thorough investigation of his murder by law enforcement, for more accurate, sensitive coverage of his murder by mainstream media and for others to understand the impact his murder has on members of the LGBTQ community feeling safe in Kansas City.

Dionte Greene, also known as Le’Vion Cavalli, was a child of the House of Cavalli, a humble young man, local performer, title holder and a rising star in the Kansas City voguing and ball scene. He was a member of the KC Falcons Drill Team and well recognized as an emerging leader in the Black LGBTQ community. Dionte was also a loving father of two seven year old twins.

KCAVP is working with Greene’s family, leaders of both Project I Am’s young Black gay men’s empowerment group and OurThentic teen group for LGBTQ youth of color, local law enforcement and the media. This murder is only the most recent deaths in a series of murders among Black LGBTQ community members in Kansas City.

KCAVP encourages anyone with information about Dionte’s murder to contact Kansas City Police Department at (816) 234-5550 and/or KCAVP at (816) 561-0550. We also encourage anyone who has experienced anti-LGBTQ violence to contact the police or KCAVP.

The money raised from this benefit will directly go to support Dionte’s children and family left behind after his murder. His funeral will be held on Saturday, November 8, at Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 11-1pm. Burial XII Gates Memorial Gardens.
