TKC FACT CHECK!!! NONE OF THE REPORTING ON KANSAS CITY'S LOWER HOMICIDE RATE INCLUDES INFO ON SIGNIFICANT MURDER COUNT CHANGES!!!

Award season is upon us again and we must prepare ourselves for politicos participating in a touchdown dance regarding the lower Kansas City homicide rate this year.

However . . .

OTHER THAN TKC, NO OTHER MEDIA OUTLET HAS INFO ONLINE REGARDING THE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE KANSAS CITY MURDER COUNT THIS YEAR!!!

The official word from police attempts to explain but just doesn't "feel" right to longtime denizens of the urban core:

KCPD assures locals that the new UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) stats are not intended to lower the official murder count.

However . . .

Remember, KCPD has been a part of stat trouble in the past . . . In 2007, KCPD didn't publish stats to the FBI and they were called out by local newsies and fed law enforcement agencies.

That memory kind of puts this year's celebration of numbers in perspective:

Chief says homicide rate may be even lower than he first thought

Money quote:

"It was the first time Jackson County Combat has cited agencies funded through the special tax levy. The chief told KMBZ, he feels sure Kansas City will finish out 2014 with less than 100 murders and then some."

Fewer murders in Kansas City is a good thing . . . But . . .

PERSPECTIVE: UNDER NEW CRIME REPORTING STATS THAT GUY WITH THE SWORD THAT WAS GUNNED DOWN LAST NIGHT PROBABLY DOESN'T COUNT AS A LOCAL HOMICIDE!!!

The local stats don't include "justified" killings . . .  In fairness, the stats are always changing and murders are added and subtracted consonantly and even years later. So it's up to readers to decide if this number really speaks to the quotient of violence on local streets. Given that the "Blue Sheet" has now been rendered useless and corporate media isn't going to ask any real questions on this topic . . . It's up to this blog community to decide if the lower numbers really represent success and/or a reduced level of violence on local streets.

You decide.

  4. So now the police decide what is a homicide even though the results are the same (a shot dead guy) between two cases?

Why would I believe that this move is not designed to taint reported statistics? They sure as hell didn't make the changes as a public service. I guess the public is as freaking dumb as the local press.

  5. Yeah but it is like changing any economic or crime statistic. It doesn't matter how much they cheat as long as they cheat the same amount every year.

It's not like they can manufacture a year over year 10 percent drop or something.

  6. Cooking the stats is easy, but now that $ly looks ready to cruise to four more years of serving no one but the monied class the KCPD should really just tell the truth.

    Who are they fooling?

  7. The statistics from the Police Department have always been manipulated to serve their own political end. Mayor James wants to demonstrate that because of his tenure in office that crime has drastically reduced. The only agency in the City who has access or authority to manipulate the data to serve that end is the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Despite being controlled by the State of Missouri, it is election season and politicos will do whatever it takes, whether fact or fiction, to win an election. Public graft is the competition and who gets to play is soley based on election results of the people.

  9. so if we no longer count justified killings as homicide then why not throw out all previous justifiable killings then compare the murder rate of the current year to those rates of past years. the definition of homicide has always been the killing of one human by another.

  10. To use UCR (UNIFORM CRIMINAL CODE) is a joke. It's not the standard for tracking crime anymore. The FBI, who compiles crime data uses NIBRS (NATIONAL INCIDENT BASED REPORTING SYSTEM) to track crime stats. UCR allows for homicides to be tracked in a completely different manner.

It's like everyone else is using Celcius and we are not.

  11. Shut up Tony... It doesn't matter. Those same folks from the same communities will be shooting at getting shot next year too... who cares if it's off a dead guy or two.

Try and find out how many citizens have been killed by police in the USA. Though the departments across the country are required by law to report those figures are not released. There is no penalty for not releasing them either.

Police always decide how to classify homicides to cook the numbers. Philadelphia, NYC, Dallas, all the cities report their fudged numbers.

  13. The lesson here is to protect yourself.

Be aware of where you go and who you are around.

It is obvious we cannot expect our police and politicians to protect us, our health and our property.

Ask for God's protection, guidance and direction.

  14. It's nothing but good news if in fact there are fewer homicides in KCMO, but there's not any real analysis of why that might be.
Better EMTs and emergency room docs and nurses?
Smaller caliber weapons and lousy shots?
A constantly decreasing population east of Troost?
One thing you can be sure of is that Sly and the gang will be taking full credit and that all the nonprofits, neighborhood organizations, church groups, and "community activists" will be lining up at the public money trough looking for refills.
Nothing much ever changes. It just gets a new name.

  15. KCPD has been cooking those crime stat numbers for a LONG time. Don't want Killa City to look too bad. It's easier to fudge the number than to have to go out and do policing.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's bad enough they shitcan so many real felonies into city court charges. I get that the city needs the money, but seriously, you are gonna let a felon become a petty offender to keep the city in business? In the mean time you are chasing traffic violators into telephone poles out on the streets? WTF?

  18. 12:44 PM Thus, laziness is a form of dishonesty where fudging the numbers makes more sense than actual police work. And you know the numbers are a racket because too many cops in recent weeks have been tweeting utter stupidity and getting widespread media coverage from it.
