TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! KANSAS CITY CELEBRATES 'SUSANNA LEE LUCKY DELUXE' FRINGE FEST HOMECOMING!!!

At a trendy restaurant on Kansas City's Westside every head in the room turned when Susanna "Lucky Deluxe" Lee walked through the door.

Lucky's sparkling eyes, curvy figure and bold tattoos make a strong impression at even the most stylish of Kansas City locales.

Lucky looks like a movie star and that's what I tell her as soon as she sits down for a brief interview and chat. She's back in town to MC more than a few Fringe Fest shows and her hardcore base of local fans have been celebrating her arrival throughout the week. The movers and shakers among Kansas City's artsy crowd have been competing in earnest for a rendezvous with Lucky. Thankfully, a sit down interview with TKC is the FIRST official write-up. Natch.

Moreover . . .

SO FAR LUCKY DELUXE HOMECOMING CELEBRATION HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF KANSAS CITY'S FRINGE FEST!!!

Susanna is shy about taking too much credit.

"The energy around this year's Fringe Fest is amazing, it's a real credit to the work that Cheryl Kimmi and the Fringe board have accomplished," Lucky says "It's fun to see so many familiar faces putting so much time and effort into taking their performances to the next level."

Over a Boulevard Wheat, the idea of Lucky Deluxe as "Queen of the Fringe Fest" is quickly but politely shot down.

Lucky whispers . . . "Cheryl is Queen of the Fringe Fest. I might be The Fringe Fest Princess. Maybe."

Lucky is being humble. After leaving Kansas City for sunny Los Angeles she has continued her work on a budding comedy career that includes engagements across the nation at increasingly bigger clubs. In a weird twist, while Kansas City contemplates the future of the Internets with Google Fiber, Lucky has become a bit of an on online entrepreneur as well.

Susanna Lee's Peeping Comics takes us behind the scenes of an LA Peep Show and also hosts interviews with heavy hitting comics like Paul Provenza and Margret Cho. Lucky funded the project through a widely successful online crowdsourcing campaign and is now pitching the first season to networks in addition with planning an online debut.

TKC instigates a bit of Kansas City bashing with Lucky midway through our conversation but it doens't last long. The outpouring of local love from the Fringe Fest and loyal fans obviously make her homesick.

"There just really isn't any place like Kansas City. It's home. My family is here," Lucky says while wistfully watching cars and trucks rush toward the traffic jam that's currently crowding the downtown loop traffic on most weekdays. "My friends in LA have been supportive but it's not exactly like being a member of the community of artists in Kansas City. In this town, it's not only about helping friends but also about being part of a group of people who want to improve the city as well. You don't find that in a lot of places."

And then in a flash, Lucky's iPhone starts blowing up again. She offers a offers a quick hug and scurries to the next gathering of fans and friends waiting for her arrival.

In fact, the outpouring of Kansas City love for Lucky Deluxe has been so great that she quickly planned an impromptu show slated for 8:30 Sunday night @ The Fishtank Theater.

While TKC watches Lucky bounce back to her mom's car and speed away to her next meet-up. I look down in my hand and see the flier for her show . . .

And so tonight, we can't help but dedicate this one song playlist to Susanna "Lucky Deluxe" Lee because it reminds us of one of Kansas City's most talented performers.

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday Night.

  1. Susanna is a very talented performer TKC.

Totally out of the league of this minor KC local blog.

Hope you realize she did you a big favor for even taking 5 minutes to talk to you.

You lucked out TKC to say the least.

  2. She's a cow with ink. What's special about that? Other than your obvious attempt to get into her pants.

  3. I don't give a crap what Glazer says I think she is an awesome comedian. Bet she gets her show on a network before Glazer does.

Bigger clubs she says. So that means places in bigger cities drawing huger crowds than King of Stinks dump has to offer.

  13. All I saw on the Plaza was a circle jerk with Glaysure as the pivot man. Hurried up and left before Harley showed up with Bob and things got really nasty and gross.

  17. Lee is very funny, always liked her. She started with us at Westport years ago. She even was a roaster on my show at OP. She roasted me. Always liked her. Problems happen with local talent when they can't move up to headline your room enough. Few can. Why. Being local they don't draw enough as name stars from TV/film. Doesn't mean they aren't good enough. Lee had to move away to get going. I always tell local talent to go to LA and stay there til they get some national media. Guys like Mike Smith, Steve Kramer, Nikki Glaser and Lee all Stanfords people, as were Chris Porter and James Johann, now AJ Finney is making some national noise and soon Aaron Branch will as well. Its hard on women. Lee I believe began to not like us much when we just didn't have headline work for her, I used her as a costar and split week headliner. Problem, she couldn't draw enough here. Shes been seen too much in KC. She did Jardines for a few years. Again, good comic, nice person. She has stayed on it for like 15 years or more. One day she may hit a home run. I hope so, she's worked hard for it. So there are no hard feelings. I wish her well.
