Last night TKC was lucky enough to catch a sneak preview performance of The Soul Collector @ The Unicorn Theater.
After doing some serious thinking about the show last night I'm convinced . . .
THE SOUL COLLECTOR IS SOME OF THE BEST SATIRE PRODUCED IN KANSAS CITY IN QUITE SOME TIME!!! RON SIMONIAN REMAINS ONE OF THIS TOWN'S TOP TALENTS!!!
Now, this was a preview and the rest of Kansas City mainstream media won't get a look at this show until tonight so don't consider this an official write-up.
However, I can't help but note how impressed I was by this show that was so richly textured in irony and social commentary.
KCUR provides some great background on Ron Simonian's career that has enjoyed a bit of a well-deserved renaissance as of late . . . TKC has been a fan of this guy since college and it's inspiring to see this writer remain one of the most cutting edge social critics in Kansas City.
All of the cast was impressive but Simonian's powerhouse performance is the main attraction. There are a great many surprises in the rather hilarious satirical musical that includes a cameo featuring the very nice guy (to whom I am thankful) who set up a sneak preview for TKC to the best show in town right now.
That guy looks like the trans fat collector.

ReplyDeleteRon is great but I'm worried about the over all course of theater in this nation. It seems that main stream reliance on musicals has even influenced the alternative theater and now we see every body singing and dancing. It's a shame that we can't have more serious offerings.
