TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! ATTEMPTING TO EXPLAIN TODAY'S CITY HALL NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST DEVELOPMENT FUND CONTROVERSY!!!
Here's the most important thing happening at City Hall in Kansas City, Missouri today that every other media outlet has ignored.
BEHIND THE SCENES THERE'S A HUGE FIGHT FOR CONTROL OF KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOOD AND TOURIST DEVELOPMENT FUNDS!!!
What is the NDTF?
It's a group of City Council appointees who approve or deny funds for various neighborhood and tourist programs put together by local organizations.
Now . . .
TKC was the first to break the story of Council Lady Jan leading the charge to strip the group of its power and bring the money back under direct Council control.
Nobody knows exactly what has motivated Council Lady Jan into action . . . But it's probably a favor more important than sharing her potato salad recipe.
Take a look @ Ordinance #120112 . . . There's a lot of detail on how the money will be recommitted.
AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS TELL US . . .
BEHIND THE SCENES CITY HALL INSIDERS SAY THIS IS A POWER PLAY FOR THE KANSAS CITY CONVENTION AND VISITORS ASSOCIATION!!!
Read the language of the ordinance carefully . . . City Hall insiders note that only the CVA meet the criteria to take over the 30% funding move that has been proposed.
Here's why Kansas City Taxpayers should care about this one . . .
TKC TIPSTERS TELL US THIS MOVE TO HAND OVER NTDF FUNDS TO THE CONVENTION AND VISITORS ASSOCIATION WOULD NOT ONLY TAKE CASH AWAY FROM NEIGHBORHOODS BUT ALSO LIMIT IMPORTANT OVERSIGHT AND REGULATION OVER HOW THE MONEY IS SPENT!!!
"This would basically give the CVA a blank check," says one insider who is frustrated with the deal.
It gets worse.
There's a move to hold this City Hall money shifting in committee today . . .
AND NOW THE FATE OF MONEY FOR KANSAS CITY NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS IS IN THE HANDS OF COUNCIL LADY MELBA CURLS!!!
Council Lady Melba Curls is the chair of the Neighborhoods & Healthy Communities Committee and sometime today around noon she'll decide if this vote is slam dunked this week in the Legislative Session OR if the City Council takes time to judge whether Kansas City needs to throw more money at local tourism efforts.
Important things to consider . . .
- Critics contend that the taxpayer cash given to the CVA would basically disappear and there would be even less funds for neighborhoods (i.e. taxpayers) hoping for help for their events.
- Parts of Platte County in Kansas City could potentially be cut out any access to funds because they don't have much influence in either the CVA or NTDF.
- A TKC TIPSTER puts it best . . . This shift of taxpayer funds would have "little oversight, control or limits."
Another interesting angle:
This is one of the first Kansas City money fights where The Mayor and City Council don't look so united.
Sure, they might have fun bowling but there are competing interests at play in this decision that serves to further define The City Council's approach toward spending taxpayer cash.
DEVELOPING . . .
Maybe an e-tax refund? That's a much better idea.
ReplyDeleteThat photo of the council behind the fast food counter is exactly where most of them belong.
ReplyDeleteAnd Melba Curls is chairing the neighborhood committee? Good-bye even what little attention there is already paid to KCMO residents.
What a joke!
And now, on to the new $100 million streetcar project, the All Star Game, and the downtown hotel. We hve lots of money to spend, just none on the people who actually live here.
The City is wasting our Tax dollars.
ReplyDeleteWho is the etax doucebag? This tax has been in place since the 1970's and recently renewed by 70% of the votes. Don't like it? Move and go get a job in JOCO.
ReplyDeleteOhhh Laaawd!!! Melba is involved??? Tax payers are in trouble.
ReplyDeleteOnly Melba can save us?
ReplyDeleteI guess Cofran was right. It's time to move out of Kansas City.
The most alarming thing about this picture is that everybody in the picture is fat. Sure wish I could afford all the food that our city council persons can.
ReplyDeleteWow. Maybe you should take a look at some of the wasteful shit that NTDF dollars have gone to. You don't think kick-backs and pay the consultant deals are at work at the neighborhood level. BS.
ReplyDeleteAt least the convention meetings are public and the beard is well known. Give me people who actually do semi-worthwhile things versus another "neighborhood fest" that draws 10 people.
"Give me people who actually do semi-worthwhile"
ReplyDeleteIs that supposed to describe the CVA?
Gimme a break.
Funk Wins.
ReplyDeleteThis whole town is fat.

First suggestion was right. Give me back my e-tax. NOW.
ReplyDeleteHow's that E-Tax taste now?
ReplyDeleteI like the line about Melba. I think she has a good chance to do the right thing here and prove that she understands how important her position can be. I haven't always been a fan of Melba before but I think even she can see that this ordinance needs to be more carefully thought out and more checks and balances provided before we move forward.
ReplyDeleteEtax doucebag. That tax has been in place since the 1970's. It was renewed by 70% of the voters recently. Don't wanna pay, move or find a job in JOCO.
ReplyDeleteHow's that e-tax working out for you?
ReplyDeleteDid Dan Cofran just discover this blog?
ReplyDeleteOooolala what a mess!!
ReplyDeleteI used to love the movie The Big Lebowski until I saw that picture of the council.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it, buy John Sharp is right. He opposes this ordinance and he's right. It's a money grab by the CVA.
ReplyDeleteI watched this hearing. I'm not suprised by Jan & Cindy for going against neighborhoods groups because they are some elitest bitches that only think about themselves and not the good of the City. However, Scott Wagner is suppose to be a strong advocate for neighborhoods. Does he even know what NTDF is about? I hope he is not just another follower.
ReplyDeleteCouncilman Jermaine Reed made JAN,Scott & bitch Cindi suck ass. This man got Jan is so many lies and he let be known. Go JR.
ReplyDeleteJan was tongue tied with lies. This ordinance is bad news. Why should the CVA get a guaranteed 30% AND get to apply for another 50% of the fund? One reason..,Rick Hughes knows whose ass to kiss and his lipstick blots are all over Jan, Cindy, and Scott Wagner's butts .
ReplyDeleteThe NTDF Committe is opposed to this, both current and past members, the public is against it and several council members are too. The CVA needs to do a better job with the large amount of funds they have. They suck at their jobs and throwing more money to them isn't going to make the CVA suddenly effective. And Bill George supports this, do it must be a bad idea if that self-serving piece of shit is for it.
We really want to have another $25,000 hot dog picnic with the usual 33 guests this year. Where are we supposed to find the money when our budget is only $600,000?
ReplyDeleteKeep those dollars coming our way!
Did the chamber hire Kim George's lobbying house?
