Student Showcase At A Kansas City, Missouri School District Fundraiser And Awards Dinner: An Affair Of The Arts
Last night's "Affair of the Arts" showcase featuring Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) students at the Marriott, Muehlebach Tower seemed to be an overwhelming success.
I did my best to lurk through the crowd and noticed corporate sponsorship from just about every big name company in Kansas City.
The Muehlebach Ballroom was filled with some of the most important people in Kansas City. I did my best to hold my breath.
School Board Member Kyleen Carroll is seen here schmoozing with the crowd and I would be remiss if I didn't note the upbeat nature of the gathering.
The KCMSD students attending the event were the best of the best -- Like these ROTC students from across The District. School Board Prez Airick L. West calls these kids "scholars" and at this event the terminology seemed appropriate to describe all the young people in the audience.
School Board Member Joseph Jackson is seen here with School Board Prez West . . . And if you look closely they're trying really hard not to smile give away their overwhelming joy.
Why?
Because they had this crowd fooled.
It was impossible not to see the students and their work on display last night and not feel some measure of hope for the KCMSD. The performances were intelligent, thoughtful, original and even masterful at times.
But, tragically, these scholars aren't representative of what's going on in the District.
The KCMSD Event Was Simply An Exercise In Propaganda.
With the exception of a well deserved honor given to Rosa James . . . Last night's awards were nothing but political payback to powerful people.
Former Missouri State Senator Yvonne Wilson took home a prize because she stood in the way of a State Takeover.
West paid tribute to KC Chamber and banking bigwig Peter J. deSilva for his support.
I'm pretty sure it was KCP&L honcho Michael Chesser (or some facsimile thereof) at the event in between his attempts to raise power rates on fixed income grandmothers throughout the area.
Basically . . .
SCHOOL BOARD PREZ AIRICK WEST TOUTED KCMSD "RIGHTSIZING" WITHOUT EVEN A WHISPER OF THE VIOLENCE AND ARSON AT SOUTHWEST THAT HAS BEEN A RESULT OF THE DECISION!!!
A very nice lady offered me a free meal but I didn't want to eat with lawyers and other Kansas City business and political pukes who live to pat themselves on the back while this town's greatest school system FAIL continues to circle the toilet bowl of history.
It was sort of a melancholy evening because the "scholars" working as entertainment and/or props obviously have more talent and potential than I ever did. Meanwhile, the Kansas City power brokers obviously felt even taller and more self-confident as they stood on the shoulders of these students in order to power their own sense of self-satisfaction . . . And I'm pretty sure most of them don't live in The District and don't have kids attending the KCMSD.
Still, at the very least . . . The music was nice. Check a few short clips I've compiled featuring the very best the KCMSD has to offer; they really are impressive:
The last performance in the clip was by The Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Wind Ensemble. In two days these talented KCMSD scholars will be traveling to China to perform. It's certainly a once in a lifetime experience that will take them far away from Kansas City and the rest of the KCMSD that remains mired in violence, arson, low test scores and teacher-union-busting despite just a few bright spots on display for Kansas City's upper-class last night.
There is something just not right about Airick West.
ReplyDeleteI knew we could count on you, Tee, to try to make horse manure out of any pony associated with the KCMSD. For decades the district was "run" by a bunch of deadbeats who were way more interested in shoveling money out the door to themselves, families, and friends than they were about educating young people. That's why we have thousands of 2o-somethings who can barely read and do math and are basically unemployable roaming the streets. And that board certainly didn't want anyone from the business community involved, because then their theft would be found out. It was "hand off OUR district"!
ReplyDeleteNow you have a board that is actually trying to educate students, most of who by far just want to get an education and make something of their lives, and everyone focuses on the small minority of thugs who are practicing being the losers that they will surely be and in fact they'll be lucky to live to see their mid-twenties.
It's way past time for all of us, particularly all the good residetns east of Troost, to stand up and take back their neighborhoods and taking back their schools is a good place to start.
Black kids who behave like a bunch of thugs aren't any more representative of that community than Latinos who get drunk and pee in the street.
Mindless criticism of people working hard to fix a critical institution that was abused for decades gets tiresome. Get off your dead butt and go walk the halls at Southwest. You never know, you might just learn something.
You certainly pay $75 for a ticket and I just know YOU wouldn't accept a complimentary ticket from one of THOSE corporations, so how did you get in, Tee?
ReplyDeleteI hope not by making believe you were a journalist!
Where was the school board at with all the problems with Southwest. I did not see them over there but when there is a party that is where the school board is. No change.
ReplyDelete"I hope not by making believe you were a journalist!"
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I got in.
Dream big.
The guys at the rope line must have been distracted!
ReplyDeleteWhat about basic education?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of southwest. I'm a teach for America teacher at southwest. I seen airick, Derek Richey, Kyleen Carroll and several other board members at southwest helping out. Just last weekend they helped clean and paint the school. So all that talk about this board not caring etc is bs. I for one am proud to be a part of the transformation.
ReplyDeleteWhich ones are the officials in your group shots?
ReplyDeleteonce again how much money was raised n why did it go? -West wins agiain! KCMSD scholars lol
ReplyDeleteCollective IQ of the "scholars" appears to be less than 98.6....What a bunch of would-be humans....
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is a start, and only a start. But what a nice reminder that the district is home to talented, poised young men and women of color doing amazing things. Hard to talk about 'those kids' when you see what they can do. Would have liked to see some representation from the heavily Latino schools (East and Northeast) as well as from Central? Maybe we can have an event to celebrate those scholars as well?
ReplyDeleteThere is reason to celebrate what is going right - no matter how much is going wrong. The kids deserve it, even the ones who did not participate - even the ones who are struggling at the bottom of the heap....they deserve positive attention given to their schools, so that they are given leaders to follow and reasons to push through. Once again, Kansas City schools are shown that there are people willing to support their successes, that they are important enough to garner the attention of Kansas City citizens, companies, and press. Congratulations, Kansas City!
ReplyDeleteI'd fuck Kyleen Carroll in her ass. Then cum all over her face and tits.
ReplyDeleteAirick West is an odd duck for sure. But I think he is trying to help.

ReplyDeletehey, 3/11/11 7:50 AM - "I'm a teach for America teacher at southwest. I seen airick, Derek Richey, Kyleen Carroll and several other board members at southwest helping out."
ReplyDeleteyou're a TEACHER? with THAT grammar?
oh, gawd.
I am a principal and I will lose teachers b/c the district is wasting money on "looney" contracting deals w/ Covey's gang of friends. All the district employees that Covey likes are in graduate school with him at MO University on our tax dime. Talk about fleecing our children.
ReplyDeletetkc only takes pictures of fat white chicks and black dudes...
ReplyDeleteSo a huge success? There were not more than 75 "paying" guests there. I bet the entire event raised perhaps $1000 total for our 'scholars.' What a joke.
ReplyDeleteAnother dog and pony show, using the students, so the fat cats can network and figure out how to shake out even more money from any source to line their own pockets... the students will NEVER see any of the funds from this "fundraiser."
ReplyDeleteTFA dude, you are part of the problem, not the solution...let me know how you like law school...
