TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! JIM GLOVER'S KANSAS CITY STORY INCLUDES MULTIPLE GUNSHOTS FIRED NEAR THE 4TH DISTRICT CANDIDATE!!!
More than any other candidate in the upcoming Kansas City primary election, Jim Glover has had a tough time in the past four years. In fact, it's because Mr. Glover has endured some rather harsh times that I find his story so captivating.
Close local political watchers and TKC Readers know that his wife died not so long ago and he was left with 5 children in his house immediately following the tragedy.
But here's something I recently learned while talking to the 4th District At-Large Candidate . . .
JIM GLOVER HAS REPEATEDLY FACED GUNFIRE LIVING IN MIDTOWN KANSAS CITY!!! IN FACT, GLOVER HAS BEEN DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO BULLETS BLAZING PAST HIM NO LESS THAN THREE TIMES!!!
Like all Midtown residents he's been walking and had the random bullet move past him. I guess that's something we all take for granted.
However, a few years ago Jim Glover was again standing near his house when an armed robber passed through his neighborhood and he moved past the guy and gunfire to get his kids and neighborhood children out of harm's way.
Finally, talking with the former City Councilman I learned that he was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight at gas station and one young man was shot to death as Mr. Glover stood beside him and phoned for help.
What impresses me is that Jim Glover has stayed in this town despite so many hardships and danger. His commitment to his neighbors and this community hasn't wavered. While these experiences would have hardened so many others or struck other people with cynicism at the odds of local improvement, Jim Glover still stubbornly believes that he can make things better.
At the heart of his campaign is a jobs platform that sounds promising if he can get it to work.
"You want the answer to crime? It's jobs. Give someone a job and you've done more to fight crime than any other method available to local government," Mr. Glover said. "When people have jobs they are invested in the community and in their lives. The simplest and most effective thing we can do to help people in communities stricken by crime is to make sure they have access to jobs."
Again, while listening to Mr. Glover I couldn't help but notice his persistence and hope for the urban core of Kansas City where I see none.
And while I'm always a fan of any story where overcoming adversity is central to the theme, that's not to say that Mr. Glover isn't at the forefront of the political battle in the 4th District. He calls out his opposition when it comes to TIF and big money GOP donations. He also feels confident that his name recognition will help him move past the primary. That's all political stuff and it'll be decided in the Primary tomorrow.
However, what I notice is that Jim's story so closely mimics the Midtown Kansas City experience. Tragedy, struggle and even violence have been a part of his days in this town but he still thinks there's hope to make things better through political representation. Somehow, I hope he's right.
I was leaning towards John. Thanks, Tony, for reminding me of Jim's commitment to Midtown. go Jim!
ReplyDeleteNext time my aim will be better...
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding. With his high profile and contacts he cant make things better on his own block.?
ReplyDeleteHe should have run for office this year.
ReplyDelete8:57 - That's real easy to say from Crestwood you spoiled fuck.
ReplyDelete"What impresses me is that Jim Glover has stayed in this town despite so many hardships and danger. His commitment to his neighbors and this community hasn't wavered."
ReplyDeleteTake note Mike Fletcher.
Is Jim looking for the martyr vote.
ReplyDeleteJim is a good man who has been through some rough times. I don't know if I am going to vote for him but I do know that it would a shame to let all his talent go to waste. Whatever Mayor does win needs to find a place for him on a board or commission. He is a valuable asset to this community.
ReplyDeleteWay too much inside baseball. Politics really does suck, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteWhy? Cuz of the trashy people it attracts!
Like you radio man?
ReplyDeleteCha-ching time for Tony and his last minute stories.
ReplyDeleteThis is the lamest way to try to get votes I have ever seen. Who hasn't been subject to gunfire in Midtown. Sad really sad.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting. I'm not going to vote for him but it's interesting.
ReplyDeletePlease! The whole bit about Glover being left "with five kids in the house" is playing the martyr to the nth degree. It was a tragedy when his wife passed but the kids went back to their respective fathers. And the gunshots? They sound highly exaggerated like most of Glover's claims, such as his self described heroic effort to build Costco. Anyone who has lived in Midtown has more than likely seen or heard gunfire. If Glover is so wonderful, where has he been the fast four years? He certainly hasn't been active in his neighborhood crime prevention efforts.
ReplyDeletejesus h. christ.
ReplyDeletetony, this is god awful journalism, (I consider you a real journalist, my mistake) come on man!
fucking ridiculous, seriously, ridiculous.
Give someone a job? This guy said, at the UMKC 4th district forum, that he was more concerned about potholes than crime.
You're telling me that he's been through all this and he hasn't been affected to focus, or want to focus on crime.
My ass good sir, my fucking ass.
If you ask me, that's a seriously telling point in and of itself. He's obviously blind to the things happening in the city and even in his own neighborhood. Jobs may sure offer some strong deterrents to crime, but so do education, fully funding arts programs, youth sports programs, and even faith based outreach.
There is no magic bullet, that's for sure, but if someone was about jobs like that, they sure as shit wouldn't be putting jobs we already have, in jeopardy of moving off to Kansas.
Also overheard in the UMKC forum, Glover talking about what amazing anchor tenants, pay-less, and sears or k-mart (some bullshit) would have been for the midtown project.
Sounds like a real rational thinker there.
cliff's notes for the TL;DR crowd
1.) Wants jobs, but is cool with losing them to Kansas.
2.) Has been shot at/around over 3 times but is clueless on crime, offering no solution other than some tired, "teach a man to fish" talking point. Also overheard at the UMKC forum saying he was more concerned about potholes than crime.
YOU KNOW WHAT, YOU TELL THAT TO THE 100+ MOTHERS WHO BURIED A CHILD LAST YEAR.
You're a pompous ass Glover, and you're a ball-less hack-job reporter Tony
Gob, where's Beth G. now, I miss her. Jan, can I write you in?
If I were Anne McGregor, I would be PISSED about this. At least Anne has been active in our neighborhood in recent years. She's worked hard, hard enough Glover is not the only person running who is all about neighborhoods anymore
ReplyDelete@12:35
ReplyDeleteI agree, at least Crawford came to our new baptist ministers union off olive, and he's really committed to helping us, win or lose. I've seen more from him in my community than Glover.
And we're happy to have his economic development experience.
This is just a bunch of kids scratching for the crumbs of a failed city. None of this really makes a difference. People that make a difference should push north of the river and leave the sewer behind.
ReplyDeleteIf KC needs to depopulate I sincerely hope they do it to the north. Plenty of land to fuck up there. Let the battlegrounds work their way out in the downtown, midtown and Northeast area.
Rebuilding in 10 years will be a positive once the herd gets thinned and moved.
More crime and gunfire in kansas city. So what else is new. happens everyday, and he just now notices? Where has he been the past 5 years?
ReplyDeleteMany neighborhood leaders say Glover would listen to their issues and then never hear from him again.
ReplyDeleteGlover thought he could phone it in, just like his "campaign" for mayor in '07. The same mindset will produce the same results.
ReplyDeletethat's a a nice "I'm a stupid asshat" picture of Jim.
ReplyDeleteTo prevent crime you create jobs? But what business can locate anywhere near the crime ridden inner city? The security and theft losses plus high taxes make the suburbs way less expensive. Its not a chicken or the egg question - you cannot create real jobs in a high crime area. You must reduce crime by whatever means and then jobs will come. Just a typical old liberal pandering to Afican Americans instead of telling them the truth.
