TKC EXCLUSIVE AND THE SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! THE KANSAS CITY HIP-HOP ACADEMY COLLABORATES WITH NEW SCHOOL CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES!!!
Saturday was a big night for Kansas City Hip-Hop and politics. Fringe festival headquarters and Cheryl Kimmi hosted a surprisingly well attended community event coordinated by The Hip Hop Academy.
The youngest and least politically affiliated City Council hopefuls attended the event hoping to deliver their message to a crowd that probably hopes for a change from the status quo if the "Enough is Enough" title of the event is any indication.
(City Council Candidates at the event from left to right: Mahlon Davis, Ed Pace, Tracy Ward, Brandon Ellington and Delmira Quarles.)
Once again 3rd District At-Large City Council Candidate Brandon Ellington seemed to connect with the audience in terms of their concerns and hopes for Kansas City's future. Ellington noted the diversity of the crowd and their obvious commitment to change at the grassroots level.
4th District At-Large Candidate Ed Pace also noted that both he and Ellington "spoke the language of hip-hop" and offered these constituents more direct access to local government and real representation of their interests more than any other candidates currently running for office.
All things considered, with more than 100 people circulating around this grassroots community event it was a gathering worthy of recognition. So often politicos speak of "regular folks" or "average voters" but then go on to spend most of their time consulting with the usual class of elites and other power brokers.
Make no mistake, the crowd at the "Enough is Enough" event were more representative of the Kansas City electorate than any other local special interest disguised as a voting bloc. It was clear that neither the candidates nor the crowd had very much cash, connections or political influence. Nevertheless, these City Council hopefuls are the only people running who aren't bought and sold by the same vampires who have been bleeding Kansas City dry for so long. And this group doesn't really have much in common with the other Kansas City class of petty bourgeois candidates who fund their campaigns with the power of their personal fortunes and/or egos.
The candidates gathered at the "Enough Is Enough" event represent the purest form of Kansas City civic interest and eagerness to participate in local Democracy powered solely on the strength of their principles and ideas . . . And that's probably why not one of them have a realistic chance at winning.
Still, it's hard not to admire their commitment to the City's future, their willingness to help and maybe even their optimistic naiveté.

This grassroots Kansas City Hip-Hop gathering has inspired tonight's playlist.
As always, thank you for reading and have a safe and fun weekend.
Funk wins.
ReplyDeleteWhere is your girl Sharon Sanders Brooks...or Melba?
ReplyDeleteIt's about the last chance for KCMO to elect some people who actually have principles and ideas. You're going to need all the brain power, innovation, and credibility you can get when the e-tax fails and the public isn't going to continue to put up with the incompetent, clueless, and self-important bozos that have been "running" the place for many years.
ReplyDeleteHip hop is the music more and more white people are dancing to....their hipping and hopping right over into Kansas. KCMO is fucked up and this is more of what proves it.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone noticed that Mrs.Rosemary Lowe attended Enough Is Enough event with Brandon Ellington?
ReplyDeleteIf you added up all of those candidates' I.Q.s, you wouldn't hit triple digits. That's a sorry lookin bunch.
ReplyDeleteTalk about a sad group of self-empowered wannabe somebodies. They should have their next event in Tony's basement.
ReplyDeleteWell 10:22 and 10:29 this is our last chance to get KC out of the dog house and if you idiots don't understand that I feel sorry for you, I believe that these candidates have a real chance and I hope evrybody supports them.
ReplyDeleteHa ha don't hate :) at least they are sitting here on TKC writing about your sorry ass. Ok your IQ of 2-1=1
ReplyDelete12-4 10:22 and 10:29 are the same idiot ask me how I know?
ReplyDelete"Fuck Me" Tracy changed her hair color? Well her campaign advisor Patrick Touhey has a lot of trouble dealing with people of color so she is still a scum sucking bitch.
ReplyDeleteIs Ward putting on the pounds? C'mon girl, lose that weight. You can do it!
ReplyDeleteIt was a great turn out,and everyone had a blast, the children were a part of this event. I left with a new insite to what can happen when "enough is enough" give these guys a chance at least come out and here their views. We have had enough of the sellouts.
ReplyDeleteTracy is slim and trim, she doesn't need to lose anyweight, meathead.
ReplyDeleteThat's right enough is enough!!
ReplyDeletelet me enlight you with some news, Melba Curls,3rd district at- large been in office for years aint did "nothing",Durwin Rice,3rd district at- large will not be able to communicate with the citzens on the east side of troost"you know why"!!! Jermain Reed,3rd In-district go back to ad-hoc.Tracey Ward,6th district at-large pink hair"come on now"!!! Malen Davis,5th district at-large has"no clue" Delmira Quarles,6th district at-large what are you talking about do you know because I don't!! Michael Brooks 5th district at- large"are you sure you want to run or you need the money"preach on preacher"
Carol Gatlin,3rd district at-large"your a comedian" so why are you running "sweetheart".!! We as the citzens are looking for strong speaker, that can express their policial views and speak for the people, also candidates that are very knowledgeable about the problems we face in our life's today, and someone who knows God is in control!!!!Come on people wake up,we been sleep to long!!!
Are you all on crack?
ReplyDeleteWell 10:29 you are right about some things melba curls is a joke, Micheal Brooks please. And Delmira who the hell is that. Durwin is in it for the money, Carol yeah ok. But Tracy Ward I could of like the pink hair she stands out and she speaks what she believes in. Mahlon Davis I don't know much about him but he is running against Circo and the whole Hotel crap is redicals and me and half the city is against her. But you are half right and have jack-ass.
ReplyDeleteIt seems they have it right go where the real people are and you will get the votes that you need.
ReplyDeleteMaybe for once in KCMO it won't be the money, consultants, or "political influence" that prevails, but instead, the VOTERS!
ReplyDeleteFor all of the old hangers-on hoping that maybe this time if they support the same old extortionist "leaders" from the east side, a few more of the crumbs may fall their way.
Good luck with that.
Wake up and elect some new young people who actually care and want to make a difference.
No other candidates including the mayoral have had over 100 folks to attend any of their events! So therefore the voters are stating and standing up for change!
ReplyDeleteBrandon Ellington is what KCMO needs especially on the Eastside of Troost. He is a leader that actually listens to and recognize the their needs. He is the Only candidate that I have seen that people are believing & following to events, this past event proves my point, young, old, black, white, yellow, red, brown, rich n poor was present at Enough is Enough! Like it or not the people have spoken Brandon Ellington 3rd District At Large will be elected in 2011.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Ellington where all over the city Saturday morning & mid afternoon. Grass roots is amazing it really gets the people involved in the process. The wanna be's slept on this candidate ability to connect to the citizens.
ReplyDeleteOops meant Brandon Ellington campaign people were all over the city.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Sherwood Smith calling candidates telling them not to “Run" that Local 42 is putting 100's of folks out to knock in doors for Circo & Curls! Sherwood Smith is also spreading rumors against the candidates. One of the candidates is speaking out in shit starter Sherwood Smith! More to come!
ReplyDeleteSherwood Smith also stated they Union is putting over$150,000.00 behind Cicro!
ReplyDeleteOwnership and control
ReplyDeleteWard is not slim and trim. She is putting on the pounds big time. I am worried about her. C'mon girl. Burn those calories!
ReplyDelete1:14 am, what do you mean Rice is in it "for the money?" Do you know how much councilpeople get paid for the work they have to do? He's in the race to make a difference, and he can do it.
ReplyDeleteShut up, Durwin.
ReplyDeleteWhat difference can the tulip guy make? Come on everyone knows that he is a part of the takeover. Isn't he Airick West?
ReplyDeleteI am putting my vote behind Mahlon Davis I like thw way he handle his self, he can not be bought, paid off are scared to go against the big boys. Time for change is now.
ReplyDeleteWow that last one is really inarticulate.
ReplyDeleteEmbarrassing.
I think all of them have a very good chance.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading opinions from people on candidates when the posters can not even demonstrate a 5th grade vocabulary or 3rd grade grammer. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be fun watching these candidates get trounced at the polls. Notice how they all seem to hang out together all the time? One big Loser Slate.
ReplyDeleteI actually like Ellington as a person and applaud his idealism, but think he would be in way over his head at City Hall. (Though Melba is, too.) The others are just the usual assortment of wanna-bes and whack-jobs that come out of the woodwork every four years. If any of them have a clue as to how city government works or should work (other than, "Better!"), they sure as hell haven't shown it yet.
Will 9:59 how can they show you they have not had a chance to. People are shotting them down before they even know them as a person. Personal the current City Council is a joke, and I am really getting sick and tried of them. Tracy Ward and the pink her is her signature and I hope she sticks to her morals, And Mahlon Davis I really like his web site, I hope everything he says on there he sticks to. Ellington have not really heard a lot about him, but will be keeping my eye on him. And I personal I'm glad they are staying close because the current City COuncil and Mayor do not even know how to communicate.
ReplyDelete'Hip Hop Academy' sounds like a bad skit we might have seen on SNL. In other words- a joke.
ReplyDeleteWhatever Ellington and the Hip Hop Acdemey brought out over 150 people. What other candidates have done this?
ReplyDeleteAll the rappers on that cd suck balls, except Str8 Jakket and Stick Figa
ReplyDelete150 people? BFD. You could have announced a citywide Probation and Parole meeting, for drug convicts, and had 150 people show up.
ReplyDeleteWell your parole officer said you couldn't attend mb. Haters are out.
ReplyDeleteLearn what're you writing about it was not all rappers and they were not on one cd-asshole. Don't get mad cause you're ball less. ha ha
ReplyDeleteIt was a excellent event"enough is enough" no matter what you may write it proved a point everyone plays an important part in society. Get it-sure you do.
ReplyDelete10:24.....you must be on that cd....you suck.
ReplyDeleteya call that a good crowd? Get rid of the politicians, relatives, and their handlers and who's left?
ReplyDeletelets face it. no one gives a shit! its all completely HYPE!
you're right, about the current staff at city hall is not doing anything!!! We need to stop all the bullsh** talking and do something and lets get some new faces in that want to make a difference in our community!!!
ReplyDeletePeople the current city council is pimping black people. Terry Riley and Troy Nash pimped the black community for years without accomplishing anything of value for the community.
ReplyDeletePlease, Please people wake up and vote for new leadership in the council I am tired of the same old go along to get along people.
