Northeast Somali Community Proves Key In Missouri District 40 Race

An interesting aspect in the Missouri District 40 Race (currently in recount) that has been heretofore unmentioned is that immigrant communities like the Somalis, East African and Sudanese played a vital role in determining the rhetoric of the election.

Both the Will Royster Camp and John Joseph Rizzo's winning side noted their strong support among local Somalis. But today I had an opportunity to talk to a couple of members of the community and they noted that the "elders" decided to support Rizzo in the end.

The most important aspect of this, to me, is that politicos ON BOTH SIDES had to engage these communities like never before if they were serious about winning. And in an election that hangs in the balance by only 6 votes, EVERY vote was key.

BUT IN THE END SOMALI SUPPORT OF JOHN RIZZO PROVIDED A PATHWAY TO VICTORY!!!

If I understand correctly, and I think I do, it was the effort to build a coalition between all of these communities that was vital given that they aren't usually unified. Also, the Somali "elders" weighing in was a bold first step to the political activism of the whole community as well.

Food for thought: A great many Somalis in Kansas City remember the Colonial relations with the Italians were a bit better (or at least more cordial) than other Europeans and that earned Rizzo a few points.

On Royster's side, they earned the help of politically active female who provided access into that community as well. Unfortunately (and Wikipedia will back me up here) women don't traditionally have very high standing in that culture but maybe Will Royster's camp might help to embolden Somali women into taking more advantage of their American freedom. And, in the end, helping and uplifting people is what politics is all about, right?

Anyhoo . . . The lesson here is that diverse communities organizing their votes can not just offer more influence but ultimately decide elections.

  1. John Rizzo has done a tremendous job thus far uniting a community for one common cause. He is a coalition builder, he has a great career ahead of him if he can continue to do for others what he has done in the multicultural district.

  3. Sounds to me like someone needs to go in and clean out the Board of Elections commission office.

If it was private enterprise, that pissant little election would have been recounted by noon Wednesday.

Maybe if your awesome tipsters were actually WORKING in their offices instead of emailing TKC and gossiping about who is sleeping with whom.

  4. So Rizzo is admitting the Somali community put him over the top? Interesting...

  5. Will you lost. Face it. Get out of campaign mode and get into life after campaigning.

  6. Surely we can even divide up the Somali community further, maybe by height or the first letters of their last names.
We just don't have anywhere near enough special little political groups in KCMO!

  7. I'm sorry allow me to laugh my ass off on this one! Rizzo is about as pro-somali as he is drug free Tony. They didn't support him in his last three elections and didn't support him this year.

  8. Why the JJ Rizzo - Somali puff piece? Something weighing on the Rizzo camp's mind?

  9. Yeah I agree in that trying to make Rizzo pro-somali is a big stretch. What has JJ Rizzo done for that community in the last six years? He's avoided them like spinach until every election year.

  10. Tony,

can you get a quote from JJ regarding how great the Somalis were? Otherwise i think you are making this up because i have NEVER heard him even mention Somalis. See what you can do.

  11. I think the Somali people are industrious and will make good Americans.
