Today, KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS offer us some BIG NEWS regarding the future of local politics in Kansas City.
KANSAS CITY RESTRUCTURING OF COUNCIL DISTRICTS IS GOING TO GET UNDERWAY SOONER THAN ANYBODY THINKS!!!
Let's remember, according to the NEW CHARTER Kansas City can't hold three elections in a row without redrawing and reexamining the Council District lines after reviewing data from The Census.
But local politicos forgot about a simple fact . . . The New Lines CAN'T force any elected official out of office. THEREFORE, there must be 90 DAYS advance notice for Council Candidates BEFORE THE FILING DATE FOR ELECTIONS.
AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS guided me through this one . . . Let's do the math together.
The Filing deadline for Kansas City Elections Starting in February (primary) is in LATE NOVEMBER.
90 Days from November puts us in late August.
So . . .
TKC TIPSTERS CONTEND: ACCORDING TO THE NEW CHARTER KANSAS CITY COUNCIL DISTRICTS MUST BE REDRAWN BY LATE AUGUST 2010!!!
This is a big deal because we're talking about the very basic dividing lines of this Cowtown.
How will the Eastside fare in these decisions?
With Northland Districts still come across the river?
Will there finally be a District to reflect Kansas City's growing Latino population?
With the decisions coming so quickly this issue is guaranteed to be a hot mess and a great many people aren't going to be happy.
Nevertheless, it's an important topic which affects every voter in Kansas City. TKC TIPSTERS told us first. Natch.
"No sir" guy. Please go away.
ReplyDeleteWanting a serious answer, why does it matter the race makeup of the district lines? Can we not simply redraw district lines on an unbiased plot that is blind to race and economic demographics?
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a mess. Anony 8:20 have you ever had a history class?
ReplyDeleteI agree with 8:20 I'm Hispanic and I don't want a ghettoized council seat. I want a qualified Hispanic to represent me preferably in the 4th District. Tony since Hispanics live through out the metro what current district would you carve off?
ReplyDeletecontentious politics...since the beginning of time...special interests forever...
ReplyDeleteYeah, let's keep fighting over dividing up the pie as it gets smaller and smaller as more prople get disgusted with all the special group crap and with KCMO's inability to provide even the most basic services. The ship will sink with the last left on board fighting over the last crumb.
ReplyDeleteSmart!
7/9/10 10:26 AM you described mexico in a nutshell.
ReplyDeleteHA!
ReplyDeleteI would guess that if they didn't take socio-economic status into account, we could end up with some districts that don't share common interests. If a wealthy community ends up paired with a financially-challenged community, I suspect the portion of the district that needs the most would get the least. And if there were some middle of the road folks in the mix, they could forget about getting anything . . . ever.
ReplyDelete4 district will now be included in the 5th district and the hillbilly Hispanic that stated " I don't want a ghettoized " will learn to spell as he heads back to ole mexico.
ReplyDeleteMy family recarved our district. We moved to JoCo.
ReplyDelete7/9/10 8:39- You are obviously the hillbilly or never used an online dictionary. I have for your benefit provided a definition of "ghettoize". Again as a Hispanic who lives near 65th and Ward Parkway. I do not want carved up made up "mexican" district We deserve quality leadership in the 4th. I was one of the ones who was actually excited when Tony threw his hat in and his Mom before him.
