Whether her so-called "attitude" is real or not, many people who wouldn't otherwise care about Allyson enjoy discussing her demeanor. The shtick enhances her performances even as it raises her visibility.An angry, sexy old white lady who demands all attention focused on her? CLEARLY, Kansas City is on the cutting edge of post-modern performance art because I was operating under the assumption that diva-like behavior from all old broads who still have their figure was pretty commonplace.
I'd hardly call it a schtick. Arrogant and egotistical is more to the point. Handing out cards telling people to be quiet during her singing at a JAZZ club is ridiculous. What, she'd stop in the middle of a song and tell me to shut up if I said something? Plastic Sax calls it "schtick" in the same way David Basse's hat is. They're not the same. - mt
ReplyDeletekansas city has no jazz listening rooms. musicians who wish to perform in one (obviously Karrin Allyson does) should not book gigs here. our audiences are rude, under-appreciative, ignorant and usually drunk. she should know better, she's been gigging here for years.
ReplyDeleteso if she wants a private listening room she should consider doing only private performances for people who want to hear a performance rather than engage in their own conversations.
