So, when all of those whiny ass minority contractors start (justifiably) yelling about the jobs they aren't getting (but were promised) in the development of the Sprint Center; now you can tell them that the Chinese are working to manufacture the materials used to construct this town's latest tax payer supported failure. Therefore at least a few people you wouldn't want your blonde daughter to date are profiting from the debacle.
PC Sports project manager Paula Yancey explained that the arena's glass enclosure estimate was about $11.2 million. When bids were received, she said, they came in at $11.5 million or more. So the package was rebid, with some suggestions to economize. Yancey said $4.2 million was being spent with Chinese manufacturers . . . City officials said that they did prefer to "Buy American," but in this case - with only one bid - they didn't have much choice. In other words, all of the "buy American" propaganda looks nice on bumper stickers but it doesn't exactly pay the bills - unless you manufacture bumper stickers (you don't, they're all made in Taiwan).
Anyway, so far the manufacturing money is going to China, the construction jobs are going exclusively to white people who don't live in KC proper, the artwork surrounding the stadium is being produced by hipsters from New York City (New York City!) and only the bill is being paid by the people of KC. With a tab running higher than 300 million, the measly 15 mil put forth by a couple weeks of basketball can hardly be called a success. Once again, this town is paying for everyone's economic benefit but its citizens and the details of this scam should serve as the legacy of Country Club Kay not just a shiny building.
Soon we will be a hockey town again..... Oh boy!
ReplyDeleteayman - I think you mispelled "honkey".

ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect from a design that looks like a big, solar-powered wok?
Who else they gonna get to build it?
Has this project been the biggest funnel for Kansas City money to go out of town? A Minneapolis builder, Chinese materials, and Arkansas labor have all been part of this Mayor Barnes transfer of funds. She's got property in Arkansasa but what has she got in China?
